When Disney bought Star Wars there was no danger of the franchise losing relevance because Lucas had done such a good job marketing to kids. Namely, to boys. With the prequels and video games in the early 00s Lucas had purchased another 20 or so years of cultural clout for Star Wars and another crop of lifelong fans. Lucas was content to mainly target men and boys because they had proven over decades to be loyal and lucrative supporters. Disney, however, saw these lifelong supporters and the appeal to young boys as baked-in and not something they had to actively maintain or work for. They took it for granted that they had the male audience, and believed they could do whatever they wanted to the franchise to win over girls without scaring men and boys off the reservation.
So now Star Wars has a problem that Lucas had solved 20 years ago: it's no longer appealing to kids, not even boys, who were its mainstay 20 years ago. Far from growing the audience, Disney has caused the future of Star Wars to be uncertain. They have no crop of boys who will grow into lifelong fans. In 20 years there might not be any more fans of Star Wars than there are right now, in fact there might be less.
Disney's main concern right now is how to win back kids, and that means how to win back boys. But Disney does not have a good track record with winning a male audience. That is the whole reason they bought Star Wars in the first place.
