I've gone back and forth on this film. It has the authenticity of being "real" in the sense they all had to wade through dangerous conditions and live in the jungle but Herzog fellates himself so hard over this stuff I can't respect it. Then there's the animal torture, the shitty dubbing all of his movies have, some ridiculously goofy scenes that detract from the tone and overall it's... kinda mid.

Its a good film about a crazy retard.
Surprisingly, it is less dynamic and interesting than the story of the actual Aguirre.
But otherwise I guess the appeal is imagining how many conquistador or explorer stories ended in similar ways. Lost, barely remembered, full of madness and suffering and arrogance.

It's a movie about Hitler, simple as. Every word Aguirre says is a truthbomb about Hitler's psyche, when he says that the "land will be milked dry of all its wealth", how they will become masters of history, how they will rule continets, how their dynasty will be the purest in the world, these are all Hitler's words. The final words of the movie summarise every single one of Hitler's speeches: Who's with me?
