>pure artistic experimental kino from start to finish

The funniest episode was the infestation of the multiverse variants one. Except if it were released today, it would have been called derivative.

that one was funny as shit but my favorite was the one where he starts a band with some stranger whos actually like some ruler of a vast galactic empire

It feels like it makes fun of the trope and how it inevitably becomes ridiculous/convoluted when you start introducing multiverse variants of characters. Very relevant today.

show had fun being wacky and feeling like nothing was of consequence but at the same time managed to have a plot going on in the background and tied it all together in the end

Dandy was already a step down desu. The first cours was a wet fart with some nice animation. It got a little better when the premise clicked into place.

My ex-gf tried to get me to watch this shit but at that point in the relationship I had already started to really hate hanging out with her. I dumped her a month later on Christmas.

The pompadeur is stereotypical Japanese delinquent haircut and Dandy in general is inspired in Cobra from Space Adventure Cobra. No relation with Elvis

It's kinda sad he never got with the girl at the end. I didn't like that ending. They were building up a romance and just made him a loser at the end.

Reminder that you couldn't make threads about this show on /a/ because it premiered in the States before Japan. I am not joking.

Watanabe's creations are full of references to everything he liked when he was young, from old yakuza flicks to heroic bloodshed and classic Hollywood movies.

of all the watanabes, it has the highest highs and the lowest lows, also the best ending of all his stuff, yes better than bebop

Spike's looks are inspired from Yusaku Matsuda, most especifically Tantei Monogatari, and the character is inspired on Lupin III. Curiously, Cobra was inspired on Lupin III too

>watanabe making everyone sit through 18 minutes of retarded lackluster luney tunes slapstick only to end in one of the most genuinely beautiful scenes ive ever seen in an anime
EXTREMELY based, the contrast is fucking insane and i think thats what makes it hit so hard

Japanese delinquents were just copying the American greasers but they didn't have the luxury of showing up to school without a uniform. Elvis was important in popularizing that hair style.

Space Dandy was not directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. He was just a supervisor.

Shingo Natsume was the director of the show.

*His title, "Chief Director" is completely misleading.

In japan, a "chief director" isn't really a director at all. This goes for both their anime and their games industries.
It's more a way of promoting a show - they say "so and so is a chief director!" as a means of getting everyone excited, but really it's someone else doing the direction.

Watanabe went through the same situation. He directed Macross Plus but Shoji Kawamori got credited as chief director. It was a proto Cowboy Bebop considering Keiko Nobumoto wrote the script too
