I don't know your circumstances but as a straight male, breaking into song completely breaks immersion. Breaking immersion means I can't take the movie seriously. If I can't take the movie seriously it's bad and a waste of time.

Sadly I have to agree. Plenty of great musicals still come out on broadway every year, but the last time a broadway to hollywood adaptation produced a movie that was actually better than the play was Chicago, which came out 23 years ago. Wicked, Mean Girls, The Prom and Dear Evan Hansen were all a fucking disgrace.

Well i disagree that its necessarily a problem, but you are right that it requires additional buy in. I guess that's easier to do with live theater since you're already willing to suspend disbelief that the actions in front of you are really happening with the limited sets and props in a play, as well as characters sometimes just narrating or even talking directly to the audience. But is it really so hard to accept? Movies are not real life, they don't have to follow reality's limitations.

Fair enough, musicals make sense to me if it's a live play. Still not something I would actively seek. I still can't endorse movie musicals though. Of course movies aren't real. To me, singing out of nowhere with a full beginning and end to a song for a scene isn't natural. And that's what turns me off about musicals in movie format. It feels forced.
