Them all being Creole speaking Irishmen was a really cool concept. They were like every discriminated group rolled into one and then left in space. Later on when they all just got turned into the brown hordes of Zion in the Matrix and almost none of them still did the language thing right or used their hands while talking sucked.

It was survival kino, detective kino, with both plots coming together in horror kino, and all sprinkled with political background.

Laconians (the Martian rebels that escape through a ring gate with a stolen fleet) find an automated ship factory and use it to build hybrid ships. They dominate earth and everyone else with those ships. Ayyys take notice of the alien tech going through ring gates and start taking bites of things that pass throuh (literally).
Laconian emperor merges his DNA with the protomolecule to become immortal, he gets arrogant and tries to send bombs to attack the ayys, so the ayys repeat their attack that killed the ringbuilders, humans survive it but they fuck up the emperor and he goes into a coma, the OPA exploits that and beats them (bobby draper suicide bombs the laconian ship in Sol).
Long story short, the emperor wakes up and tries to merge his consciousness with the ringbuilders and Holden shows up at the last minute and just unplugs the faggot. GG.
Last scene is Amos on earth far into the future, he's living in the rubble (he's immortal now because he was rebuilt by the protomolecule on Laconia after a failed assassination attempt on the emperor got him blasted) and he meets some survivors and he's all cryptic and badass about life lessons an shit.
Good books.

But in the end the last books leaned too heavily into individual characters. Duarte was fine as a madman Elon musk with alien tech, but we really didn't need everything to resolve around bobby, Amos etc

You left out that the ringbuilders are still alive. They went into hiding and hibernation inside a Jupiter-sized diamond because they're more like energy beings. That made them very vulnerable and susceptible to the attacks by the red god aliens. So they went to sleep for billions of years until a more hardy physical species developed space travel and they left clues/lures to draw in such a species. When that species finds the diamond, the plan was to tempt them into opening it and merging with the ringbuilders. They would then take over Humanity completely and Humanity would welcome it because they wouldn't understand what's happening or be able to stop it at that point. Pretty interesting twist on the story. They barely managed to prevent it, and had to disconnect all 1300 worlds of humanity to make it happen. That killed off many worlds and plunged others into dark ages

That's the stuff I like most about the Expanse. It exploring how future humans would live out in the solar system and their experiences. Like people born and growing up only in space stations, would experience complete terror going down to a planet where it's all open air, water as far as the eye can see, the gravity feels like you weigh 1000lbs (even though it's 1G), and they can't balance for shit. The weakest part of adapting the book is that they couldn't make Belters look how they're really supposed to. They're becoming almost a different species. And that's why there's such hostility and why the events in books 4/5/6 happen. Some Belters want to escape the life in the asteroids. And others see it as their chance to finally get revenge on Inners. And many don't want the big change to happen since their way of life is doomed.

It's not generic and far better than most scifi aliens. They're not just humans with face makeup. The story is running with the idea that humans get out into space and there's already been advanced civilizations out that that conquered things billions of years ago and are long gone. Same shit happened in reality with humans finding crumbled empires. Then the story is exploring how finding their technology changes the various parts of humanity. It's a mad dash gold rush, destroying the disciplined united Mars terraforming project as everyone scrambles to get theirs, destroying the belt as no one will want to live their anymore, finally relieving Earth of its overcrowded status as billions of humans can be shipped off to new worlds. But of course every faction will be trying to get power over the others and start killing each other to do so. Just exploring how humans have acted for real in these same situations in the past
