Alien vs. Predator is a more creative and more entertaining film than anything seen in the franchise since. It's chock full of interesting story ideas and fantastic imagery.

It's sad and funny, because it's true.

Which is why it's all the more tragic that Thomas Rothman forced it to be PG. The film didn't need to be a gorefest, but almost all the human kills happen off screen. More human kills, bump the budget to put the number of Predators back to five and have more actual Alien vs. Predator fights, and this film would have been a classic.

You can't carry an entire film with just Xenomorphs and Predators. The story needs to be carried by humans. The same way people bitch about there being too many humans in the new Godzilla movies, Godzilla is the backdrop for the human story, always has been. The same is true for AVP, it's humans getting caught between two monsters and trying to survive.

It doesn't have to be exposition, but the story needs to unfold, characters need to go in, the need to go through an experience and then they need to come out of it. You can't get that with a Predator, and you certainly can't get the with a Xeno, not without fundamentally changing the characters. People already complain about how humanised Scar is, and even though Wolf has the most "character" in either of the films we don't connect with him emotionally and there's no arc to his character, no story. The next step is Predator Badlands.

I want an actual sci-fi AVP movie set in the future, complete with a massive three-way battle between a horde of Xenos, dumb jarheads armed to the teeth with pulse rifles and smartguns, and a trio of Predator jannies trying to clean shit up.

That would involve humanising the Predator. I think you guys are getting hung up on literals. Xenomorphs and Predators are not characters, they are obstacles. Ripley is not fighting against something that is actively out to destroy her, she's trying to survive the unknowable horrors of space, Dutch isn't going up against a bad guy, he's being stripped of his humanity in a test of raw natural survival instinct. Making a film with Predators as the main leads would just end up with human characterisation dressed up as Predators. If you want that, that's fine, there is probably a good movie somewhere in that, but you need to be honest about the fact that they wouldn't be Predators anymore.

Yeah and it still sucks. The last Alien movie that had anything going for it was Resurrection and its cinematography and production design. AvP was a cheesy B-movie, AvP-R was gorehound trash, the Prometheus movies were meandering cash-ins without a story, Romulus was a bunch of memberberries for Zoomers, and Alien Earth is an incompetent joke.

It is so jarring to watch an unpretentious film like AvP and then watch the absolute fart-sniffing Alien: Earth.

I said it before and I will say it again Paul W. S. Anderson is god tier when it comes to animatronics and practical effects and garbage tier as a director/writer. Him and Neill Blomkamp need to accept they aren't director material but their skills are instead for visual effects

Wolf is humanized just a little. He's not a care bear like the guy in AVP but do keep in mind that he was throwing the discus at a fucking alien and the dumbfuck girlfriend literally ran in front of it. Also what a ballsy move for any movie to do, to have the teen romance love interest and then just yeet her in the last 15 minutes like that.
And he has his big moment where he rescues the mother from looters. He then threatens the mother if she reaches for the looter's gun, and when she realizes this and stops, he lets her leave. It really plays into the "How much of an asshole is a Predator, actually?" thing that's been an element since the very first one. I've wondered since I saw it at how he was actually a huge asshole yet still refused to hurt the Colombian girl because she was unarmed.

Also in spite of the problem being the Preds' fault in the first place, note that he is fighting to save the fucking world. Even if there's selfish bullshit reasons for it, he kills dozens to save billions.

Honestly I know AVPR has its problems but I sort of love it just for the power scaling. The predators in AVP are basically fumbling teenagers on their first hunt and it's sort of pathetic, the one in AVPR is an experienced blood hunter at full power and we learn very quickly that he's the worst thing to happen to xenos since Ellen Ripley

the little things like preds not killing unarmed opponents are what make them so cool and mysterious, and have been around since movie 1. i would argue that is not humanization but rather simply a character trait of predators. true he is fighting to save the world but remember AVPR is a direct continuation of the first, where we see predators fail their blood tests and have to resort to nuking the entire region, meaning they are fine with risking earth being overrun. wolf "saving the world" in AVPR is sorta like an annoyed father running around with a fire extinguisher, trying to put out a fire at the local park that was started by a group of idiot teenagers.
