It's just a really cool setting. The clothes are cool, the types of characters are cool, the weapons are cool, the factions are cool, the technology is cool. It can bend from lighthearted romantic comedy all the way to gory depressing revenge. Something for everyone.

Frontier settings tend to be popular because they allow for a variety of high stake situations, civilization vs wilderness contrast, they are easier to conceptualize than fully civilized/urbanized setting.
