Might be a product of the current time where while raising a kid isnt quite uncommon(unless youre south korean) its not something mundane as back some decades ago when virtually everyone above the age of 20 had multiple kids. The fast Aliens xenos that die in droves and move awkwardly become dumb bugs. The franchise lives trying to cope with these very different incarnations. Alien Isolation made gangbusters with the slow stalker for instance.
In this show it’s really neither. It sometimes gets to do the Mike Myers appearing and stabbing but then it’s bravely running away, getting tasered and otherwise jobbing to humans and androids. Which makes it a bitch. Which makes it non scary.

Aliens was action not horror. It’s an uneasy coexistence.

The Romulus engineerlien went back to the stalker roots and body horror. So they double dipped a lot between Alien and Aliens xenos. (Movie had other problems).

Fans are split on what they want as well.

I still stand by my statement that the xeno is not that horrifying in the original Alien movie either. What sells it there is the absolute defenseless nature of the ship's crew, but that's it. The xeno has all the advantages, except for numbers, the plot gives it the "perfect" ground to hunt it, and it still doesn't act all that horrifying once it's fully grown. Yes, it uses smart predator tactics and has some neat baseline biological tools, but any (trained) security officer with a modern gun (not even a futuristic sci-fi gun) would BTFO it in that scenario. The depiction in Aliens is IMHO a very logical conclusion, and even there, the xenos got the initial advantage because the marines were denied proper info, prep and tools. The xenomorph absolutely requires plot armor or a big advantage, especially on a larger scale, in order to be a credible threat, like many Alien fans want(ed) it to be.

The xenomorph was already a fucked up space version of a specific type of parasitic wasp in the original Alien designs, when they were working on it with Giger and co. The mystery and vagueness did 95% of the job for the xeno in the original, which, while smart movie making, doesn't actually make the xeno any better. In the OG design and script, it was already "just a random bio-weapon beast" and the "cosmic horror" was supposed to come from this realization of the audience, that fucked up weird things like that (or even worse) might actually exist in space somewhere, evolved naturally even perhaps.

Well I kinda get your point although there are lots of horror options we never get to see. For instance an intelligent killer that also make more of itself, infiltrate spaces. Aliens is one way to do it but they don’t really do anything after overwhelming the colony. We don’t get to see the takeover either.

People are just disappearing from a community (and being made into eggs/hosts depending on which biology you want to run). Something is stalking the night leaving few traces but some shed skin. Now you have a vampire movie essentially. The xenos hide and take out machinery to keep people in the dark about them until it’s too late.

This isn’t changing the monster at all just the methods.

With the black goo mythology you have even more body horror ways to deal with it. It spreads like a plague, corrupts bodies, births more night horrors. Tons of horror stories are based on this and it easily fits Xenos as bioweapons lore.

I don’t think there’s a problem with the creature or the design just the implementation. And the 5 different competing lores about their form and lifecycle and how they act that really fuck things up. Give them more cunning and less running around in a beatemup. Lean into the weird biology more. Give them new abilities or parts. Try the “host affects xenomorph body” thread that was waved around in Alien3.

That's just part of the human element to designs. We're going to pull from what we know, even the second jaw was taken from Moray Eels. My point was that Cameron just went too hard and took away that mystique it's one thing to take design cues aesthetically from real world stuff it's another to just say yeah it's actually a space wasp with a queen and everything. The less you know the better, letting your audience guess and and theorize (with actual mysteries not that JJ Abrams/Lindelöf mystery boxbullshit) can leave them far more terrorized than showing how the sausage is made. Lambert's death is still horrifying because we can only let our imaginations run wild with it.

That's basically xenomorph version 2, a.k.a. Species, where Giger got to make a more "accurate" version of his Necronom and biomechanical nightmare people.
Basically, the true intelligence filter is tool-use, which the xenomorph simply doesn't do (despite absolutely having the build for it) outside of the queen (a little bit), however, proper tool-use *and* a humanoid build/shape basically boils down to "human plus" level of alien threat, which is the "norm" and overdone way beyond the point of cliche in sci-fi. Either you literally get a xeno with a gun (regardless whether it's a built-in biological, or a mechanically crafted one), or you get a slightly more "intelligent" space bug, there's not much of an in-between that can be really done there.

IMHO, the mystique was lost or not working (for me at least) in the original Alien already. The space jockey and the state of the crashed ship is already pretty evocative of what happened and what the situation is/was, so it's not that big of a leap for the audience to "reduce" the xeno into a "simple space bug parasite" and devalue it that way.
Therefore Cameron identifying that the "horror" of the xeno for the one trick pony which it really is, and course-correcting into scaling up the numbers and pitting them in a more "equal" match, where he still needed to give them a lot of plot armor to remain a credible threat for a sequel, was the right idea, even if the OG creature design and idea had more potential, as evidenced in Giger later reusing the same inspirations in Species.

Perhaps, but it's clear nobody else on the production/franchise/studio side, or from the original designers (other than Giger, even though he also still liked the Queen and insectoid aspects Cameron eventually went with for his vision) saw any problem or took any issue with the "devaluing" of the xeno. Like I said, it (the xeno) was never meant to be that "deep" despite many anons and fans wanting that, the Cosmic Horror of the xeno was precisely just that "holy shit, think about what a common space parasite from another solar system or galaxy could look like" and the male rape impregnator aspect, that's it.

I was kind of hoping when they reveal that Ripley had a mix of Xeno DNA the Xenos would get a bit of her intelligence as a trade off so we'd see them doing some more tricky thing like the Elgen sticky trap. But they also ended up fodder for guns. It's why I appreciate the Dark Horse comics on some of their work, especially Dr. Church's story.

Something has been bothering me about the Romulus scene. Compare that to this one. Cailee just doesn't sell it. Dunno what it is. There might be a mismatch between the xeno and her reactions, a puppet that is less articulated maybe or something else, we know she can act, so it's not that.
