Oz is an old shame for HBO. It predates Sopranos as the first hour long drama on the network and the network was always ashamed at how popular it was purely off of the freakshow aspects of it, mainly the faggotry and the constant murders.

Also, Tom Fontana was always pissy that because the show had a low budget, that he couldn't keep any actors on long term deals and it got to the point that half the cast had to take full time jobs on Dick Wolf's Law and Order shows and do Oz on their days off, which created chaos on set and was the chief reason Chris Meloni got written off the show for a full season and a half (and created problems between Dick Wolf and Tom Fontana when Dean Winters quit Law and Order SVU to do Oz full time, because he hated playing a one dimensional goody-goody detective on SVU).
