Is there some kind of mini PC OS I can use where I don't connect it online at all? Just the equivalent of having a bunch of HDDs connected to my TV with a Netflix menu?

Like the other anon said, Kodi if you just want a self contained solution. I'd recommend Jellyfin if you want a client/server model that you have complete control of that lets you store all your media on one device and stream it to all your other devices over your local network, or even over the internet if you're willing to jump through some hoops.

I personally prefer something like Jellyfin because it lets me keep the noisy bits in a completely different room from my TV.

yes, but don't buy a TV because of the OS. Buy it for the picture quality. You can always buy a box for it later. The built-in TV OS usually sucks, especially on cheaper tvs.

Yup, planning to get one with good pic quality first. Wanted to sideload apps too like Flud to torrent stufd directly to the TV. Would Kodi be a good companion to play the the download media files from Flud

1) Don't worry about the TV OS at all. It can have Roku, FireTV, doesn't matter. You can always add an Android TV box.

2) Torrent to your PC and then just stream the files to your TV. Your TV or box won't have enough space for video. You can use Jellyfin, Kodi, or Nova.

I dont want to add any additional hardware to sideload apps

I am planning to just get like 256GB or 512GB memory stick and use that as a storage device for all the torrent files and even sideloaded apps if the TV memory isnt suicient

Except the hardware on a cheap TV sucks and I doubt you will buy a top of the line TV.

USB Sticks die fast when plugged into a TV all the time. Just store stuff on your PC and stream directly to your TV and buy more storage for the PC.

I have a potato laptop that will hit a decade in a couple of years. Dont really want to stream it from a PC. I might get a new PC sometime next year if I am able to save up enough money for it though I am considering getting a console first.

I moved to a new place and would like to wait no more than a month to get a new TV. Was hoping to torrent and play movies directly out of this new TV since my laptop has started lagging a lot. I have a limited budget even till next year so this is what I was willing to live with,

I understand your suggestions would provide me a better experience but my circumstances and budget is restricting me for the time being

I have a stick I stick directly into my 10 year old Roku TV after torrenting and it works like a charm. Been doing it for 5+ years. Just codecs could get fucky direct from stick I have to be sure I download x264 not x265. It's a great half measure if you don't want to futz with a server yet

Trust me, its easier than using a USB stick. Won't lag no matter how much you stream.

> Was hoping to torrent and play movies directly out of this new TV since my laptop has started lagging a lot.
I've been where you are, pal and it doesn't work well the way you're planning. You're complicating things for no reason. Torrenting to the TV box is a pain. All you have to do is install Jellyfin on the laptop, stream video to the TV and you're done. You can also use SMB to stream video from the laptop. If you want to make your laptop faster, you can just buy an SSD instead of an HDD, and then you can just move the SSD to the new laptop. I used to be near broke and I wish I had just done that back then. Try to consider it.

Maybe x265 would play with a better media player?

A "server" is just installing Jellyfin on your laptop. Much easier than plugging a USB stick into your TV. I don't know why people plug USB sticks to their TV anymore.

I'm sure the "Roku Media Player" firmware could use an update but like I said it's a 10 year old tv and it still just werx™ even better than nee models because it loads less ads because it's so old kek
