Watching this as an adult with kids is really interesting. Francis was a decent actor with very mediocre stories that I rarely enjoyed, but the character backstory is really good. They gloss over Francis getting sent to military school and make it a joke, but in the first episode they explain he burned down their garage, constantly got arrested by police and was constantly skipping or getting in trouble at school. Each time he also had an excuse for the behavior and blamed everyone else. Now add to that they’re a middle class family both working and dealing with 4 boys who are absolute terrors and there was really nothing they could do besides just let him fuck off and figure things out on his own, which eventually happened anyway. Then to make it even worse, his brothers adored him and hated the parents because they were too young to realize he was actually the fuckup and their best shot was to learn from every one of his mistakes. It was probably beyond frustrating to see him getting cornholed and BTFO his whole life and then him gloating and teaching his brothers how to “succeed” like he had been and watching them fuck their own lives up in smaller ways. Then even even worse, when he gets emancipated and fucks off, he comes back home just to beg for money and blame his parents, perpetually, forever.

And from someone with actual bad parents, no, Louis was not a bad parent. She always supported Hal and vice versa, she punished the kids hard, but when someone fucked with them, she came down even harder which the kids appreciated, she would sometimes try to be better about her temper, but then Hal and the kids would royally fuck up the house or the neighborhood or her job specifically and she go into a screaming rampage. Completely justified. I think when we watched it, we just wanted a MILF to edge to for 30 mins and we’re upset we didn’t get it.

There's two visual gags that always stuck with me about this show, besides the Hal fixing shit one that is always posted. The episode where Stevie is riding that downhill sled thing and he catches air, and it cuts to a shot of someone raking a giant pile of leaves in their yard, and Stevie smashes into the tree in the background of the shot. Also, the one where the boys have fireworks and they light off this mega one and when it goes off it cuts to a day time shot of the same location, and then back to a night time shot. Just brilliant stuff. Really fantastic show for the most part.

They did an awful job with Francis, he was the most destructive boy by far, dropped out of high school and they had to send him to military school. Reese was a less bad version of Francis, and did eventually finish highschool without being sent away. Malcom is mostly just a smug annoying shithead, and Dewey is just a bit autistic. They improved with every child, and everyone turned out ok in the end

Watching this show makes me sad cause of nostalgia or whatever, I’ve been working a retail wage job and going to school barely passing and get some of the jokes now that I’m older. I think Lois only did a handful of bad things, I think Francis could’ve been handled better in military school, maybe more communication I guess? But she was so broke all the time she could never afford for him to come over when he needed too so I dunno, you could argue Reese and Malcom ended okay with Reese becoming a butcher and Malcom going to school which obviously would be a piece of cake for him, I feel like her second mistake besides forcing Malcom to do things as a grown man, was probably negligence to Dewey, sure he was smart but he was also pretty autistic and that probably came from the other brothers doing too much crazy shit not only to him but around the house and being the main focus of their attention.

Sitcom characters vary in who they are depending on the needs of an episode. You can't just think of everything she's done like you would a real person because the writers of one episode don't even necessarily remember a given thing in another episode and are potentially writing a character who wouldn't really do that other thing.

The show often frames it as if the boys have an almost genetic tendency to act out and chaotically misbehave, and if an episode is going with that framing then in the context of that episode she's a good mom-see the episode about her ceasing to be a pushover with baby Francis.

If the episode is meant to be about Lois being overbearing, obtusely insensitive, and emotionally unhinged, then she's a well meaning but at best significantly flawed mom, like Francis' AA episode.

One outlier is the episode where she's actively sabotaging Dewey's success, which I would argue is a bizzare outlier that goes against other characterisation to the point that that episode is only truly canon with itself.

Guessing but probably Lo-eees. English has a lot of vowels and some languages have far less. The "ih" kind of "i" in Lois is less common than the "ee" kind of "i" in like "going". I think the show resonated if you had parents that were overbearing but you got the sense they actually wanted you to get a good education and better your lot in life. The 'lesson' wasn't just love your family or something simpler like that, rather it was real and material that life sucks and if you don't bust your ass you will fall behind. All the kids were smart, but that means nothing if it isn't nurtured + the kids themselves have some desire to get ahead. The episode where the parents threaten Reese's teacher who was out to get him really gets to that ethos. Malcolm in the Middle was probably the best written of those early 00s tv shows that Fox would broadcast. It's a great period piece.
