The only way I can say it might make some kind of sense is if he severely underestimated his vulnerability. Before now, synthetics were depicted as unstoppable. From a power level perspective, the show has established that a synthetic can win a 1-on-1 fight with a xenomorph. They know the facehugger eggs don't care about them, the ticks can't suck their blood, the plant monster won't try to eat them, etc. So maybe the idea that the bugs could kill him wasn't really a clear thought in his head until he was trapped in the cube with them. It wasn't like he even totally panicked like he was certain his death was imminent, he just got really anxious up to the point that his face got melted.

To be fair, they were hardly prepared for handling live, hostile, alien specimens and objected to that fact when they first brought them all in. The facility was intended for fairly sterile research around the hybrids, but that was immediately shoved aside to pursue the xenos. Kirsche and the hybrids are also the only ones that are really interacting with them under orders from Kavalier.
Of course it should be obvious that all these aliens were all dangerous and the scientist trying to pull the husk out of the enclosure by himself would be a pointless and awful idea. The complete lack of personnel also seems to be rather standard for that area of the lab considering it's all top-secret material, but with the top brass all out at the meeting, you'd think there are still people watching cameras. I guess Kirsche was technically monitoring it all, but who knows why he didn't give a shit. My theory is that he shifted his entire priority to making sure the xenos were still alive and nothing else mattered.
