Does the climax of the film happen a month after the kids run out at night?
So that kid was buying soup on his own for weeks and the store clerks never thought it was weird, in relation to the disappearances?
Were the basement kids being fed soup too? That's a lot of soup cans.

I liked Sinners but it's kind of disappointing that it's still the best film of the year (though Black Bag isn't far behind).
The Venice boss said the other day that people need to stop expecting the next big masterpiece to screen at film festivals. The cynic in me says that he was still salty about not getting One Battle After Another (he previously confirmed that he'd tried) and knew it wasn't screening at any festivals. The obvious interpretation is that it's an attack on the media's desire to expect so much from "auteurs" (and thus the letterboxd user's expectations alongside) and then prop up mediocre films as masterpieces because of sunken cost.
But I think the better interpretation is the way that so many filmmakers seem to have stopped making films for the sake of trying to entertain an audience and instead just to prove how great they are and impress their hollywood friends. Eddington is a perfect example. The entire film feels like Aster trying to convince you how much smarter he is than the average person for being above the left/right debate.

The movie had quite a few deliberate comedy beats throughout, and the ending chase is in line with the Grimm's fairy tale style that's built up to that point.
The fact that the zombie parents and the missing children had to be fed daily implies that their digestive system was not affected by the spell. Which means they were all constantly pissing and shitting themselves. Kek. Also, the movie would have made more sense if it was in the 1990s or something but the producer probably didn’t want it to feel like “Strangers Things”….its a major plot hole that there are ring cameras in the movie and yet none of the neighbors cameras caught the 17 kids running into the witch’s house.

she attaches a personal item to mark for possession and twists the hair around the twig as a target for the possessed to attack, covers it in blood and snaps to commence the attack
there's no other ritual ever shown nor any deviation from it
she throws it in the water to stop the attack
if she needs hair and only hair and nothing else no voice commands, for direct relentless magically homing attack, how would she issue any more complicated orders like going into the woods, not to mention bringing someone inside, someone she has no means of targeting
why would she need the hair if she can just issue orders telepathically
it's not about hard to believe it's just inconsistent and poorly done since it focuses so much on the twig and it's a pivotal aspect of various scenes
but it goes out the window when there's a plot to push forward

instead of just bringing her inside?

why not take her vodka as a private item?
later when teacher is in the house already she doesn't use the hair to posses the teacher, hair is as much a private belonging as a ribbon or basket label

I'm kind of sick of this type of horror where it's not particularly scary, tense, gripping or thrilling, but tries makes you say "damn that that would be crazy if it happened irl"
It's some sort of zoomer millennial writing/directing with these a24 indie movies that make them feel different than older films or big studios
It's like their purpose is to farm "I'd need sooo much therapy if that happened to me haha" reactions
they try to feel "more real" with down to earth actors and sets but they end up being lame and gay
might just be me being autistic about directing and cinematography
So here's my problem with it. Either make these kind of horrors existing in their own twisted, semi-dreamlike worlds, like Fulci or Argento would do, or actually pay attention to the fucking details if you make something supposedly grounded.
>police not interrogating the only kind who didn't disappear
>lone kid buying tons of fucking soup for a period of time without getting attention
>lots of houses in town had CCTV, but none of them captured the fucking kids all running to the one house in a straight line
Or just set it 20 years ago and mention that only 3 houses had monitoring or something. Holy shit. I liked most of the movie and I didn't mind that it got some more action at the end (no clue why normies hate it so much), but for fuck's sake, at some point you cannot ignore shit like that.

Lets say they look through all the cameras and get a vague idea of where they went, but regardless the kids seemingly vanish. Even near the remaining kids house.
So the cops search it up and down, looking for any signs of something strange, but find nothing. What would the police do exactly? I think at that point the plot hole is the husband's excuse of a brain injury.
But again - what would the cops do? No evidence of a crime, can't do jack.
The real plothole is that if a classroom of kids went missing like the fucking bermuda triangle, it'd be global news and they'd turn the entire town upside down looking for them. The fact they didn't gives just a surreal quality of it to me and I'm fine with not caring. Didn't rustle my suspension of disbelief.

This guy is OK. Nothing special but I like the way he structures and frames his generic stories with the splitting acts into perspectives to make them feel more engaging and surprising. The characters get to feel more slice of life than usual horror garbage. Also like that there's a bit of humor here and there and he seems to take delight in having his characters be flawed and his shock value moments to be weird instead of just relying on darkness. He understands it's about contrast and buildup instead of constantly trying to suffocate you. But it's his second movie and already formulaic.

watch the movie. its not matter of lack of explanation - mystery is compelling. its that things make no sense and so beg more questions

Slow burn means that that act 1 and act 2 are dragged out and very methodical.
Good horror movies that are slow burns don't jump the shark in the end of act 2 and/or act 3.
Argue with me.

you could have said short cuts to seem knowledgeable instead
but you'd also miss the other part of his shtick which is about pacing and ending each act on a mini cliffhanger
