All in all it was a pretty sloppy episode logically. Yet again the show was carried by what I consider some pretty strong acting. Plus they had a little bit more bonding with Spock and Kirk so eh I guess that's fine. Agree that S3 overall was meh.

I guess what I can say about SNW is I'm glad it's not season long storylines like STD and SPIC. I'm watching Prodigy season 2 right now and it's just too much serialization. I like Star Trek to have beginning and end for the most part. As bad as some SNW stories can be, at least they're not 10 hours long.

Finishing season 2 of Prodigy is one of the toughest stretches of the entire Trek saga for me and I haven't even seen it before so it shouldn't be this boring. I take back everything I say about wanting a Temporal Agency show. This season is way too much time shenanigans it's just fucking trash. They call this a kids show but I can't imagine it holding the attention of a child. It's so technical and dry. On the plus side Wesley Crusher got captured and tortured anyway.

Unfortunately I stopped caring about IRL extraterrestrial life once I realized that we'll probably never get our collective shit together and explore the stars, or that only the rich and powerful will and they'll take the worst aspects of humanity out into the cosmos.

Also the fact that if any life does already exist out there, we'd never know, because all the info we're able to observe is bound at the upper limit by lightspeed, so we're in reality only able to observe recent things that are locally within a certain number of lightyears, otherwise they would've happened hundreds of thousands to millions of years ago and we'd essentially be looking into the past. For example, an alien world 65 million lightyears away looking at earth would only be able to see it when the dinosaurs were still around.

The acting was strong and everyone acted the hell out of it, but holy shit the writing was sloppy. Not even lazy - they showed but then also told, which was dumb.

For example, when it's obvious Batel was linked in some way to the warden, they then proceeded to do the stupidest five minute conference room technobabble about epigenetics that was about as retarded and long winded (and incorrect) as the pontification about introns in TNG: Genesis. Why? You literally could have had Batel do the equivalent of Neo going "Whoa, I know kung fu" and understand what's going on.
Likewise, the Inner Light sequence with the knocks as transition - yes, we get it. We get it, You overdid it.
The excuse to do the mind meld for the laser was just some Kripke tier queerbaiting, but Spirk has been a thing forever so whatever. It could have been done so much more smoothly, such as in the China Mieville book Embassytown, or even the hack reason in Pacific Rim.
The explanation about the ripoff Stargates was overwrought. Trekkies already know about Iconians. Scifi fans in general know about Stargate. We get it. Don't do the equivalent of folding a paper in half and pushing a pencil through. You showed, you don't need to tell (badly) on top of that.
The showdown between Batel and Gamble was pure Doctor Who (and the comic bit with Pelia shows it). Everyone acted their best - kudos to the guy playing Gamble for really hamming it up - but it doesn't fit in Trek. The inner light bit was nice, I guess, as a bit of emotional resolution for Batel's arc, but it could have been done much more compactly.
The costume design on the giant hoverdiamond planet was pretty nice.

Overall - every department in SNW is working their hardest, but the writers need to either take more or less Adderall, because they're just spoiling the soup with too much shit.
