I didn't even know who he was. Somebody informed me who he was later.

Then I spent lunch in an Indian restaurant inside the Rio staring at Gates McFadden and listening to her talk about how she gets paid less than the male TNG cast for appearances.

And thats how I ended up in the DS9 doc.

>Gates McFadden and listening to her talk about how she gets paid less than the male TNG cast for appearances.
Maybe she should have been a better actress. Diana Muldaur absolutely mogged her and was active in demanding better scenes. Not con payment related but Muldaur was the highest paid actor on TNG which pissed off all her coworkers. McFadden's failure to be a more popular actor/character in order to get more pay isn't sexism--it's her failure as a professional. She sucked! Nobody likes her! That's why she gets paid less.

Makes me wonder if that played into the Jack Ryan movies. Gates was seen only briefly in Red October but Annie Archer had a significant role in her movies. Maybe the storyline for Red October simply didn't have space for her but it was weird they even bothered having her there at all. Makes me wonder if she was going to have more screen time but after working with her a bit, they cut it down to a minimum.

>which has more gravitas and promotion potential, a captain of a USCG dinghy like pic related, or the Commander of the largest aircraft carrier in the naval fleet?
Its not about gravitas its about command. Picard had more gravitas on the Enterprise but he noted at times he rather be back on the Stargazer. On the Enterprise Riker was always playing second fiddle, implementing the vision of Picard instead of his own. You don't become Captain for gravitas or you don't stay captain. An Admiral has ore gravitas but even Kirk knew that it was better to in command of your own ship.
>in-universe he probably had his pick of whichever retiring or advancing captain's ship he wanted after the exemplary performance of the crew in extreme situations.
for sure the borg incident was enough to guarantee him any command in the fleet

Captain's Log: hiiiiii! This is the USS Intercourse, thrusting its way through space on another penetrating mission. Earlier today, I caught two fellas in a broom closet. They said they were engaged. I told them to disengage and report back to their stations. They jumped right to it, so I had to remind them to put their clothes back on first. Oh, the fun we have!

Think we could be talking different concepts, our opinions might actually be aligned. My reference point was an Admiral looking at two people to pick one to captain a new ship, one the captain of a small ship of little relevance and one the second-in-command of the flagship of the fleet. It's part of the reason he's had offers and why I think he's turned them down. The Titan was finally a ship too good to pass up, as well as the fact the Ent-E just wasn't the same ship, and maybe he finally felt he'd learned all he couls from Picard. Being fair, Picard is probably one of the best captains to learn from, with a lot of knowledge to be learned.

Yes, Picard was a great person to study under and eventually he would want to put that study into practice. The fact the show is only focused on one ship meant he could not be promoted but if it were real I would have thought he would have learned that lesson before seven years/seasons.

The last truly good thing I watched was Pantheon and I just checked and 20% of it was written by DS9/VOY writer Michael Taylor (who wrote "The Visitor").

Meanwhile currently airing nuTrek is giving me things like, "It's that episode with Data in the Holodeck again, but this time the detective is a woman and the explicit message of the story is that writers today felt inspired by Star Trek." It's just all the form and lack of talent of fanfiction, without the smut.

Season 5 has a lot of bangers but when Brannon Braga took over as executive producer it felt like they were trying hard to "retcon" (for lack of a better term) the Jeri Taylor seasons. Janeway's personality definitely changes here. She turns into more of a hardass who is also uncompromising.
Season 4 (Jeri Taylor) has an episode with Janeway telling the Doctor that he can't just reset himself to factory default settings because he's grown too much as not just a person but his own life form as well. (the episode is Retrospect)
Season 5 (Brannon Braga) has an episode with Janeway going "the Doctor is just a piece of technology, wipe his memory and start over" until she finally realizes that's wrong (the episode is Latent Image)

Latent Image is great but even Menosky thinks Braga gutted the ending
>While writing the episode's teleplay, Joe Menosky – who wanted the episode to have "some kind of dramatic resolution" – struggled with the scripting of the conclusion. Menosky recalled the original version: "Janeway is holding this vigil, and because of her exhaustion, she just drifts off to sleep. [The Doctor] has something dark and sad and also moving to say. He looks up and she's asleep. He gets up, picks up the book and he reads a little, end of story." Extremely uncomfortable with this version of the final scene, Brannon Braga made changes to it. Menosky commented, "He just cut out a bunch of dialogue. He restructured certain things […] In the newer version, despite the fact that 90% of the dialogue is there, the structure of the scene was different. [Janeway] ends up leaving." The used edit of the ending was not selected until later in the installment's evolution.

It's still one of my favorite VOY episodes and Picardo's performance is great but it's interesting to read about the background on the ending
>Joe Menosky's opinion of this episode was influenced by his disappointment at having the final scene be rewritten. He said of the original version, "[It] was one of the better scenes I have ever written […] I think [Brannon Braga] made it slightly less effective." Concerning the fact that Braga's revision had Janeway ultimately leave the holodeck, Menosky remarked, "In my mind [it] is absolutely against the premise of the scene." He concluded by saying of the episode, "I just will never be satisfied with it because of that process."

>"the Doctor is just a piece of technology, wipe his memory and start over"
Didn't happen. They altered his memories to stop a feedback loop that would destroy his program. In your screenshot Janeway isn't arguing that the doctor is a piece of technology and doesn't matter, she's arguing the inescapable conclusion that his programs works via parameters and so they have no choice but to alter his code in order to save his personality.

my point still stands and it's been bothering me ever since H&I restarted voyager from the beginning
in season 4 janeway tells the doctor "you're more than just a hologram" (which would have happened AFTER the incident where they had to wipe his memory to prevent his program from destabilizing)
but in season 5 janeway is quite insistent that the doctor is just a hologram (until she realizes the error of her ways)

I've also watched every VOY episode three or four times each and Kate Mulgrew's demeanor completely changes around S5, I don't know if it was the producers or a personal choice on her part

She's highlighting the difference between Seven's biology and EMH's code. You're trying to take things out of context. The entire episode is about whether or not they should alter the EMH's code in order to stop him from mentally breaking down.

Janeway in a random episode from S2 when she had her bun hair is completely different from Janeway in a random episode from S5 with her hair let down. In the former she's a wide-eyed scientist who is more warm and friendly with the crew. In the latter they drop the scientist aspect and she's much more hardened and standoffish. You could chalk it down to character growth but the change feels so abrupt rather than gradual, especially watching the entire show in order on H&I like I have been

Janeway should've gotten to that point after season 1, they should've started Year of Hell-tier encounters a few episodes into season 2, and by the end the Voyager should've been an unstoppable juggernaut of amalgamated technologies and crew. Guttering agony phasers, Borg tractor weapons, interphasic torpedoes, and all manner of other things ripped off of antagonizing forces that fall to them. Oh, and a FUCKING BATTLE CLOAK. Like, god damn Janeway.

One more thing about Voyager that makes me frustrated every time I finish the show is Endgame and how the Borg feel shoehorned into it. They should have instead maybe done something interesting with the Caretaker's species, the Nacene, effectively bookending the series like TNG did with Q and DS9 did with the Prophets (the latter with... less success unfortunately)

Always thought the neelix and Kes relationship just being ended with no scene was really weird. they talk about it a few episodes after it happened, but the breakup itself was never shown.

seems like an irl decision.

They got enough negative feedback and finally started rightfully questioning the idea in the first place.

The romance never really worked. Worse than that, making Neelix super jealous of Tom Paris who was innocent of any wrongdoing just served to make Neelix MORE unlikable when he was already struggling to catch on.
One of those early season decisions which was just baffling.
I really love S4-S7 VOY in particular and S3 is also really good but man, I HATE S1 and S2 outside of a few standout episodes. I hate the Kazon, hate a lot of the stuff going on.

That 'sode when Kes is possessed by a alien warlord. She dumps him. It's the warlord who's doing it. Though. But, I think they stay broken-up from that point forward. For some reason

And there's one later when she's planning on leaving to travel with an alien explorer. I think she says goodbye to Neelix then too.

And her and Tom had a bit of a will they / won't they. even with an alt-future where they're married and have a baby together.

Maybe that's what you're think of.

She should have dumped him after S1, the whole relationship was weird and creepy. Her being with Neex makes sense when she lives in a cave and only hangs around with other 2 year olds but once she gets to Voyager her horizons would expand. Elogium is a natural breaking point, Neelix is obviously not a serious partner. What kind of homo doesn't want to breed fertile backpusy.
