Aquirre is a concise look at the downfall of a madman while Fitzcarraldo is a more drawn out journey of Herculean proportions undertaken by an ordinary (if eccentric) man. Both are great films. I think I personally prefer Fitz, but Aguirre is the perfect intro to Herzog.

Witchfinder General. Not too similar, but it is about a manipulative psycho using a time of strife to fulfill his personal desires, so there are parallels. It's a great film, and I will shill it whenever possible.
