House was an end of an era for television. People had developed taste for real quality things (aka thanks X-files, and the like) and there was more than just 6 shows to talk about, huge budgets could get put out for a show but stuff was still cutthroat so people cared and the industry still had the work ethic to crank out huge seasons of quality. Of it's time, House M.D. wasn't the only banger of a show on television but it was probably THE most banger show.

It's also procedural investigation conflicted genius medical drama with a quality british actor lead. The card had all the hole-punches for a successful cash in. There's no shame in looking back and realizing the show was good.

What made it compelling was that the characters were adults who acted like children, meaning that there were consequences. The older I get, the more I see that most tragedies are a result of precisely this.

House can't cope with losing Cuddy so he drives a car into her house. Wilson doesn't like that Cuddy hurt House so he buys her dream house. House is a drug addict because his bitch girlfriend went behind his back because she thought she knew what was best for him. Childish feelings leading to real adult consequences, just like real life.

The only character with a hint of plausibility to it was House himself, a son of a wealthy doctor who spent his youth locked in with medical books while being a natural born savant AND has the age of experience. Then of course in the real world he'd be fired, sued, jailed, and unhireable anyway.

I'm pretty sure they mention that House is incredibly well-respected but also that he is completely unhireable, he works where he does because Cuddy was guilty over what she did to him and because his salary is way lower than it should be. She says herself she got a top of the world class doctor for pretty much a starting doctor's salary. It was an absolute fucking steal, enough that she can set aside $50k a year for legal expenses resulting from House and not even blink.

House's department is still a $3 million dollar black hole because he doesn't bring in as much money as he spends on cases, but for sheer reputation he's a no-brainer, it's a teaching hospital and they can advertise that they cure the most difficult cases imaginable when nobody else can - what he costs in dollars he brings in reputation.
