Its a short story not a book. Its a metaphor for a shut in, misanthrope like Kafka. The family's son turns into a giant bug, his family tries to deny it, tries to help him as he becomes more and more of a burden until eventually they stop caring, he dies and everyone is sad but also relieved.

I didn't get the impression that they were sad. even his sister, which was the only one sympathetic to his plight at the start, started suggesting killing him near the end . If anything, they were happy about it.

You're meant to use black poster boards you ding dong. Or settle for gym foam mats, it'll muffle sounds too. Just make sure you put reflective tape on the outer side so it doesn't absorb too much heat. It'll also blind your neighbors which is a plus.
