Hard to put into words, but it brought me through so many stages of my life I've been through. I'm ashamed to say I don't think about my grandparents that have passed much, and this brought back a lot of emotions related to them. Called my surviving grandma right after. Thinking about it later, there were so many moments that I loved in the film.. every scene with Mr. Ota, the lightning on the film that yang-yang watches superimposed on the girl, ting-ting's dream. Like Winter Sleep (2014), it's a very long film that I wanted to rewatch immediately.

Just felt like post-Tarantino to me. I expected more from Zhiangke because people had spoken of him as being a great director, -but from what I saw-, he's just another slopmeister, but chinese. The only redeeming aspects of the flick were a turboqt (Li Meng) and some of the dramatic aspects of the flick. Not even the sceneries were pleasant or interesting to look at.
As for why the film sucked (in a weird way), it's because Mr. Jia tried to go the way of senseless violence as le metaphor but in le hyperlink cinema way, and he failed miserably because the violence was insanely cartoonish and cringe, up to the point where people were laughing at the joint from how over the top retarded it was. The symbolism was also comically heavy handed and immature, with images of cows and the word "animals" being repeated every time they killed someone and the phrase "do you understand your sin?" coming at the end of the joint. Very dumb movie, 5/10. The fucking curator at the plex talked about this being Jia's best joint in his opinion, so now I'm pissed off thinking that his career sucks and watching his films will be a waste of time (but I'll watch them anyway).

Ok guys. I need help. The lossless rip of the DvD has produced black bars on the top and bottom of the film. I tried recording with Handbrake but it always comes out shit and creates artifacting and doesn't even come close to the quality of the lossless rip of the DvD. Changing the aspect ratio does nothing as the black bars top and bottom still exist as its in the physical data of the film.

What do I do?

Okay, well, I uploaded the lossless rip of the export edition and added it to the others. When I get the Thai box set I'll rip that too and fix the subtitles. Fingers crossed that it could be better than this. All thing's considered, the DvD looks well enough and I'm happy that we have only that.

Diary > Mouchette > Balthazar > Lancelot > A Gentle Creature (also underrated) = Joan of Arc = A Man Escaped > Pickpocket = L' Argent > Devil, Probably (i respect the film in some capacity but none of those conversations grabbed me much) > Four Nights (its cute but it felt more Rohmer than Bresson) > Angels of Sin (actually decent drama even if generic) > Les Dames (i saw it once, could barely focus, don't remember shit, i should probably rewatch it, but that kind of romance movie is not my thing)
