/tv/ famously doesn't hate it, and commonly defends it, particularly the Assembly cut (which is better). I, however, do strongly dislike it, although it has a few marginal things making it interesting.

The film has a larger cast than the previous two films, and they're all BALD. This is a terrible costume choice as it makes them all look as similar to each other as possible. They're all just meat for the alien, and since they're violent criminals, I naturally don't care about them. The worst piece of editing in the original cut (largely repaired in Assembly, but let's judge the film based on what was actually released at the time) is the sequence when they lay the explosive goo trap and accidentally ignite it following an attack. In the original, the editing just becomes completely incoherent at that point. I have no objections to killing off Newt and Hicks right off the bat, this is an easy way for a writer to do a hard reset and tell their own story. But your story involves a bunch of nasty prisoners. I don't care about them. In fact, the Assembly Cut actually makes Dillon LESS sympathetic precisely by showing us MORE of him. He's really just a cynical fuck who wants to LARP peacefully as a christian. Nothing really wrong with that in itself, he has nothing better to do, but he really only cares about his own drama and not the rest of the species. Some christian. Also, I never cared for the CGI movements of the alien itself, they seemed a bit crude and uncanny, like fast stop-motion animation.

It's a bit unfortunate that Clemens was honest about himself with Ripley (establishing trust/intimacy), and this honesty was never requited (Ripley never told him the full truth about her past, the alien killed him just beforehand), but that at least makes dramatic sense.

Disagree. 4chan has it's hivemind just like anywhere else.

That said, I used to not like Alien 3, because it's too much of a standalone movie. Killing Newt and Hicks means it rejects being a real sequel to Aliens.

It's not difficult to imagine a modest rewrite/re-edit of Alien 3 that places it between Alien 1 and Aliens. I just don't like when events in one sequel have nothing to do with future installments.

That said, if you take Alien 3 as a standalone movie, it's perfectly fine, and I'll even say it's grown on me. It just sucks watching it for the first time, if you really liked the previous movies.

A similar problem I have with The Wire after they kill off Stringer Bell, and we start to follow the younger black kid, that I don't give a fuck about.

I have a similar problem with Toy Story 3 making zero reference to the Prospector or what he's been up to lately.

I have a similar problem with the second half of Death Note after L is killed. Nothing is intrinsically worse about the rest of those franchises. I just hate when a story resets who the antagonist is.

i watched it for the first time very recently and its basically the same movie as alien 1 and 2, except almost nothing happens in it, mostly off-screen kills and no facehugger, most of the movie is pointless talking. also the xeno looked extremely retarded when you do see it and you can tell its a small dog in a costume.
resurrection is better because it did some new things even if wacky, you couldn't predict what was going to happen and there were some actually creepy and gross scenes.

A supposedly experienced squad conveniently goes into a portion of the colony wherein it's specifically demanded that they cannot simply open fire due to danger of explosion. This proceeds to get most of them killed even though they end up shooting their way out anyway without any consequence. Meaning they could have been way more effective if they weren't given useless orders that allow the aliens to do whatever they want. If you can't write a conflict without the needless handicapping one side, your plot is shit. Aliens is a poor sequel, only Alien is actually good.

Alien 3 is the 90s experimental era at its worst. You take a beloved horror franchise and kill the protagonists, make the leading lady into a cancer victim about to die and turn it into a weird surreal and depressive movie about prisoner monks doing goofy parkour running away from a xenomorph. The whole thing has shit-stained cinematography too.

And why, if it was planned, would they not simply send her to their captivity instead of having her crash in a prison planet and very likely die like the others did? Checked. I got you.

Best theory is it was Bishop. He was alone and had plenty enough time to bring an egg aboard the frigate with the drop-ship.
Thereโ€™s more to it I canโ€™t remember including the second marine team, which is completely unheard of but makes perfect logistical sense from the W-Y business standpoint. Iโ€™ll go scour the internet, and if I can find you some information I will.

Itโ€™s all fan theory, and it relies on Bishop being just programmably psycho as previous models but also more devious and convincing, as he was the upgrade.

I donโ€™t like to think of Bishop is anything other than lawful good / a true blue hero.
The โ€œprison planet hyperspace fever dreamโ€ is my go to explanation.

Neill Blomkamp had a great treatment for where he would have taken the story. There was art created for Hicks and Ripley. It looked tits.
Fucking Ridley Scott caught wind of his people were jizzing over the idea of a Blomkamp Alien film and said, โ€œNyooh!โ€

I like Alien 3 a lot, but I kinda feel it would have worked better if Ripley & Pals just weren't in it at all. Weyland Yutani transport carrying xeno specimens crashes on prison planet, an infected individual survives the crash, chestburst in the infirmary, a group of scrappy lifers in rusty sewer pipe hell desperately try to defend themselves with makeshift traps and tools modified into weapons while a jet-black demon picks them off one by one. While itโ€™s well-made on a technical level, it is a wildly unsatisfying closer to a trilogy. Instead of letting Ripley ride off into the sunset with Newt, Hicks, and Bishop, and let a new character take over the story, they shit all over her character progression just so they could keep Sigourney Weaverโ€™s name on the poster. She went from conquering her trauma and reclaiming a part of herself (motherhood) by the end of Aliens, into a physically and mentally broken mess in 3.

It is an aggressively mean-spirited movie, and thereโ€™s not a single likeable or relatable character once you get beyond Ripley. Itโ€™s all interchangeable bald Brits yelling โ€œFUCKโ€ in dark corridors, whereas 1 and 2 had a colorful cast of distinct characters who all brought something to the table. Even Dylan, whoโ€™s arguably the co-lead spends basically all of it yelling and manhandling Ripley with his Malcom X act.

Thereโ€™s also the fact that the entire story hinges on a plot hole. How did the eggs make it aboard the Sulaco to start with? The queenโ€™s ovipositor was destroyed, so she couldnโ€™t have laid them, and thereโ€™s plenty of shots of her walking around, so itโ€™s not like she carried a few aboard โ€œjust in caseโ€.

I don't even hate it. It's just the first mid entry in the franchise. After the second one they had a number of concepts that would work, but Weaver wanted things her way on Parts 3 and 4, and both were just failures from the conceptual stages. Both entries hired absolutely Triple A directors, and both said they were lousy, difficult shoots. All the writers said they basically had avalanches of notes from the executives and Weaver and just had to make the best with a bad hand.

Like I said, I don't think 3 and 4 are all that bad, they just aren't on the same level as 2 or 3.

The entire production was a chaotic mess. They initially hired Vincent Ward who came up with a crazy concept, which is precisely why you hire someone like him, and then the studio said "this is crazy" but decided to keep random elements, like a planet of monks. Hence the shaved heads. Then randomly they are like "I don't get Monks. Just keep the designs and themes and make them rapists and murderers". Both 3 and 4 are packed with nonsensical choices like this. 4 initially had Danny Boyle. He got sick of it. They brought in Jeunet and Caro. Then Caro was like "fuck this shit" and walked. Fincher had his photographer fired by the studio because he was "old". They then kept fucking with every choice, so he quit as soon as shooting wrapped. And so on.

Aliens hits you in a place you didnโ€™t know was raw until that monster shows up. Forget the studio talk about androids and gimmicks. The real pull is that xenomorph, that nightmare made flesh and shadow. Itโ€™s a creature you donโ€™t just watch; you feel it creeping inside your gut, crawling into the sweat and fear. The way it moves, patient and brutal, itโ€™s the dark pulse underneath all the noise of gunfire and screaming. You connect with it because itโ€™s pure survival, pure instinct, far more honest than any polished human lie.

Sure, Bishop and the androids shape the story a bit, some quiet tension in the background. But itโ€™s the xenomorph that owns the screen. Itโ€™s the unpredictable force that just wonโ€™t quit, a living god of chaos and death. That monster isnโ€™t just a villain; itโ€™s the reason the fear sticks in your bones, the reason Ripley has to be more than tough, she has to be primal too.

And speaking of Ripley, the women in Aliens are everything, gritty, fierce, unbreakable. Sheโ€™s not a hero because sheโ€™s strong in a usual way; sheโ€™s a survivor because sheโ€™s wrapped in scared, raw humanity. Her fight for Newt feels like love and terror tangled up in one ugly beautiful mess. The xenomorphโ€™s presence makes everyone sharp and alive, human and monster circling each other like some dark dance. Itโ€™s a film about connection, to fear, to survival, to the things that gnaw at your soul when you thought you were done fighting.

it didn't teleport up the shaft. Ripley hit the button on both elevators because she was panicking. She got on one, but the other picked up the Queen. Then Bishop had to take off and circle in the dropship because the platform was unstable. That gave time for Ripley to have to wait around, and the Queen's elevator to arrive up at the platform. Bishop hovered the dropship and got Ripley onboard, but an explosion pushed the dropship sideways into debris, and the Queen jumped onboard. Then the dropship took off to escape.

The common theory on the egg and how/why/when is that in an emergency the queen can deposit and emergency egg that gives birth to a royal facehugger, the one with webbing and armor.
This facehugger can deposit 2 eggs; 1 queen and 1 drone so the new queen can start making more eggs and the drone brings people to facehug

The aliens ARE NOT stupid. They never have been. They take a second to figure unfamiliar things out, but they're highly intelligent. For as much as you shit on Aliens and pretend it shows them as unintelligent insects, Aliens actually shows them as very fast learners. As you said, the Queen understands it's a transport vehicle and just needs a button press. The Queen understands it's she can follow Ripley into the aircraft and get at her. The warriors fight the turrets and don't know what they are at first. In the second fight when they figure out they're simply robots and not worth defeating, the warriors go around and curbstomp the marines. But alas, please continue to pretend Aliens depicts them as retardedly unintelligent, and continue to mock the movie for ever showing them as smart because that is OBVIOUSLY also a stupid shortcoming of the movie.

Not him. But I think people find it boring because it's just unpleasant people arguing about what to do. Which is literally Dan O'Bannond formula and worked well with the first film. It might be because this is just a retread of that formula except the stakes are reduced owing to the fact that most people would be happy to see these guys die and it relies on a lot of Deus Ex Machina's - the fictional world will just "have" solutions to problems. You don't feel like you are working out the problem with the characters. Also the drab and claustrophobic photography and production design. The original had the huge opening act on the weird planet and ship. They probably needed an act that took place elsewhere or did something interesting with the creatures.

None of it is cartoonishly evil until around 3/4 of the way into the movie when he's already in such deep shit he has no options left.
>Burke starts as the only one to believe Ripley and wants to verify her story to help her and himself
>He tiptoes into seeing if her story is true by sending a message to the colony to have them send a rover simply to see if there's a ship there. He doesn't want them to go inside and wants to keep it a secret so he can get the bonus; not his fault they decided to go inside, and wanting to profit is understandable and not cartoonishly evil.
If colonists had spotted the ship, then returned home and reported back that it was there, everything would have been swell.
>Burke sets up well armed and equipped team to go rescue the colonists. Everything at that point should have also worked out great. Marines shoot and kill all aliens, rescue any trapped colonists, grab a few samples to put in storage and return to company labs.
They were not supposed to get into some crazy situation where they couldn't shoot back or have the dropship crash.
At this point, there's been so many lives lost, equipment destroyed, and so much money wasted, that Burke is freaking the fuck out since all blame will be laid on him. So yes, this drives him to try and change the narrative, shift blame towards something else, and still try and grab a payday. That's understandable and not cartoonishly evil.
>Ripley checks the logs and sees he was the one trying to verify her story but didn't warn the colonists
Here's where he gets more evil. She threatens to make sure his life is ruined and he goes to jail forever. Over what is justifiably an actual bad call and not malevolence. So he decides to have her and Newt impregnated, then sabotage the Marine's cryopods. That's not redeemable, but again, everything was collapsing on him and he's panicking. It's a good arc and believable versus the antagonists of today that are superevil from the start and at all times.

the Company knew about the xeno, "crew expandable"'d the nostromo, received ripley's sign off message and was looking for her for the 50 years of her disappearance. they find her, debrief her and let her sit on her ass for a while (we don't know how long between the debrief and burke knocking on her door telling them contact has been lost with the colony)

we can assume that during that time, he (and specifically him) sent Newt's parents to go look for the derelict between the debrief and him contacting ripley about the contact loss with the colony, with full knowledge of what would be encountered and what would ensue.

he assembles a shit team of thug marines (who don't stand to attention in front of their superiors, but instead slouch and make jokes at them) with an inexperienced team leader (Gorman), in order for the mission to fail catastrophically, and extract some xeno specimens, hitching a ride on the USCM ship under the excuse of restoring communication with the colony (we can assume from this, there is some sort of higher authority preventing the Company from straight up grabbing a science ship and going to LV426 to gather alien specimens, instead having to go around in the shadows redirecting haulers and other people with excuses to land there)

this is all machiavelically pre-planned and with full knowledge of the results. full evil. which is why the burke actor is such a kind fresh face guy, to make people believe he didn't do anything wrong.

where the plan fails is that he himself goes there and takes with him the only survivor of an encounter, that was a bad idea. neither he nor ripley should've gone, and he should've just send an android to get a specimen on the down low, but that way we wouldn't have a movie now would we

I aw it when it came out. Here's my thoughts about it back then:
Too brown/rust colored overall.
Bald Ripley ain't sexy.
Bad and cheap SFX of the xeno.
I liked the doom and gloom feel of it.
The no weapons prison setting was good.
The ending was a good idea badly executed with abysmal SFX. No problem with Ripley killing herself, but that whole grabbing the xeno as it came out was way too much and felt ridiculous.

>Bald Ripley ain't sexy.
She's not ever supposed to be sexy. In any of the movies. It's not a sex series. Ripley being a woman is just incidental. If anything, Alien 3 put her sexuality more in the light with her almost raped then fucking the doctor.

In Sigourney's own words: she's alone, just spent days sweating and afraid for her life. She's getting ready for bed so of course she'll take off her clothes, doofus. There's not supposed to be anyone there and the crew was comfortable around each other nude anyway.

She wasn't the protagonist, dumb fuck. She wasn't even revealed to be the survivor of the first movie until 80% of the way through and it was a shock. Her character could have been Parker and it changes nothing. In the sequel she's just along for the ride as an advisor again for 80% of the movie. You idiot dorks act like she's Anakin Skywalker or some shit and everyone knew she had a prophecy to fight the aliens all along.

Because good Alien movies have the Xenomorph presence well linked with the human story with good story, it's made integral.
Ali3n? It's a movie where the human story could essentially stand on its own without much rewriting, and it's a fucking boring one at that. I hate movies that think they're saying more than they actually are.
But yeah it's not an Alien movie, despite the fact they shoved in a Xenomorph. It's just a quasi philosophical dreary film that insists on itselfโ„ข

No one said you needed to do that at all. Predator 2 already showed that you just move on to a new group of characters in another location. There was zero reason to use Ripley, Newt, and Hicks again since their story was done and concluded.

It's not like they had to follow it up right off the end of Aliens. Like another anon said in this thread, they could have skipped a decade ahead, added a little bit of wrinkle makeup to Weaver and Biehn, and recast a 20-something Newt.

Or, even better, just bring in an whole new cast.

I loved Aliens as a kid when it came out.
As an adult, it's a failure
1) Alien warning no longer being sent out in the time that they establish a colony there
2) WY knows exactly where the Nostromo and the refinery went - that radio message to Antartica Control would eventually be picked up.
3) WY knows what sector the ship was sent - they have flight manifests and even changed out the science officer with Ash a week before the refining mission was deployed (verified by the novelization, there's even a conversation between Ripley and Cartwrite's character if either had slept with him before
4) CREW EXPENDABLE - WY knew about the ship and had already translated the message before the Nostromo launched

56 years goes by and WY bioweapons never try to continue the mission? Bullshit.

Aliens 3 was mediocre - Alien Ressurection sucked balls other than being quotable (who do I have to fuck to get off this ship) and the shoplifting robot talking about hating computer networks because it's cold in there.

Alien 3 was actually my first alien and so for a long time I defended its honor. But now I've seen them all and thought about it. And the problem with 3 is that it just doesn't do anything new and is so inferior to the original. Also, the only good sequel is Resurrection.

The script was alien from the start. It was just shit.
Two kike producers wrote it and admittedly didn't give a shit. They wanted their money and their credit and shut down anything else. For some reason they also had Sigourney on their side and the three of them choked out any chance of this being okay.
