What makes you remotely see this as some sort of biting contradiction? Or that Macbeth comparison a sound analogy? His entire being is about how good he is, and at the moment when he is given reason to even remotely doubt his skill, he is faced with the most perilous fight of his life. If you take it as a standalone narrative (and you have no choice in that matter), he is not making it out of there. You don't need a fucking Walter White zoom out of his body to surmise that he is dead.
