Definitely. I can't even understand how this is weird now especially when every kid over 10 has a phone. Grew up in the 90s, latchkey kid, and would regularly be gone all day up to no good. Had normal responsible parents too unlike a lot of my friends. Wasn't at all unusual to be a few miles from home on my bike doing whatever the fuck

The stupid ones tended to die in funny ways like the kid who took a bet he could climb up a power pole and grabbed the wrong piece of metal at the top, his hand seized around the bar sending current through his body then threw his semi-cooked body to the ground. I grew up in a big city as a millennial and it was still true for me. The disappearance of this sort of thing will absolutely destroy birth rates in the long-term. Having kids is fine if they're basically free range and effectively get raised in the community after they're 6/7. This is how humans grew up for most of our history. This culture we've developed where children live atomised lives and need constant care, supervision and attention until they're 18 places an insane burden on parents. No wonder more and more people are noping the fuck out of that shit.

To be fair, teen pregnancies aren't such a big deal, all things considered.
The one girl I know that got preggers as a teen has a completely normal, stable job and has a second kid on the way now with the same guy.
Meanwhile I missed my chance of having kids and my long term gf left me. If I had just knocked her up back then we'd probably still be together.
So in total I'd say a teen pregnancy is better and more healthy than waiting with kids until 30.

Yes, it was common for kids to roam freely, at least in rural and suburban areas. Not sure about inner cities because I didn't live in one as a child of that era. It was nice to have that freedom but looking back at it, I do remember more than a few creepy adults who we shouldn't have been around and dangerous situations where we were more lucky than smart when we didn't break a leg or something worse.

Need to dig up the graph (and source data) that showed how much time different generations spent with their children. Boomers spent the least amount of time by a wide margin but you can see the decline starting right before they became parents. When the first wave of latchkey kids became parents, the graph shoots back up, with those parents spending lots of time with their children. It peaks and declines a bit, but not too much with Millennial parents and has been on a plateau ever since.

>Were kids in the 80s actually allowed to roam around unsupervised
Yes, and well into the 90s as well (depending on location).
I only got in trouble once because I not only didn't stay where I said I was going to (went to a friend's house but got bored and left to go play in the creek near his house), but I was late enough coming home that I nearly missed dinner. My mom had called my friend's house to tell me to come home for dinner and they said I'd left hours ago, which made my mom worry.

There were no other circumstances where I spent most of the day away from my house and ended up getting in trouble for it.

I have 3 kids and would prefer that my oldest actually do anything at all autonomously out of the house with his friends. But "hanging out" and just wandering around the neighborhood unsupervised stopped being a culturally normal thing among kids by 2008.
The area I just moved to in PA has a lot more middle schoolers and teenagers wandering around the neighborhood with their friends during the day than I ever saw in VA.

Maybe I just need to buy my son an eBike so he can join the gang of a dozen kids his age that seem to putter around together down the hill from us.

The people I know that had children while they were teens turned out well (as did their kids) but that was because they came from supportive families that helped them with providing and raising the child. The hysteria over teen pregnancy was mainly over the bad outcomes that were primarily due to bad family backgrounds. It wasn't PC to point this out because it would have made certain demographic groups look bad. Instead society was propagandized that pregnancy in anyone under about 25 was a terrible thing that ruined lives.

Had a friend get killed doing something similar. He was taking photos of our town's skyline and the railyard was a good place to do it since it had wide open spaces with few obstructions of the skyline. To get a better shot, he stood on the coupler between two boxcars of a stationary train. As he was standing there, the train suddenly jerked into motion. He lost his balance and fell onto the tracks, with his head getting smashed open by train wheels almost immediately.
He had a wife and kids. Really fucked up way to die doing something so seemingly mundane.

We were. Even in the middle of the night (when older). The only problem was some asshole cops, but most of them didn't care enough to bother us.
Me and my friends loved to explore sewers, condemned buildings, etc. We got arrested only once when we explored the subway tunnels.
We also liked to stay outdoors for the night sometimes. Tent in the summer, snow fort in the winter. We even build our own treehouse system in the small wood behind the local hospital. We would go from tree to tree using ropes and shit.
I miss my youth...
We also ran around rooftops. That was before parkour became a thing. At least we didn't know about it.
Got arrested once, never broke any bone, got injured only once when a dead tree I was walking on broke and I cut the palm of my hand I don't know how. 14 stitches.
We also foraged for food in the local fields and woods sometimes. Just for fun.
Oh, and we played in construction sites. Once we almost go caught, but we managed to hide. One of us had a real hard time coming out of the pace he hid in as there wasn't any stairs/ladder/rope so we had to find long planks of wood for him to climb on to get out.

Television and videogames kinda sucked at the time so kids played outside a lot. And this was true for everyone, so it was easy to wander the neighborhood and find other kids to play with.
These days kids just hang out in online games instead. Even if they wanted to play outside there'd be nobody else outside to play with.

I think this factor is much bigger than parents cloistering their kids away from pedos.

Must have been 1999, 2000. I think I was maybe 6 or 7 the first time I went to a different friend's house after I was done playing at the friends house my parents knew I'd be at. Stayed out passed 6pm with no call, my parents flew into a panic and called every parent and neighbor in the neighborhood. Embarrassed the shit out of me, when they found me walking back home after a successful pokemon card trade where I came up on a holo Moltres, they jumped out the car threw me in and berated me
Grounded me for two weeks and made me promise I would always call and let them know every time I deviated from previously discussed plans.
Not just for this but I wish every day I had the capacity to discuss complex thoughts and feelings with adults as a kid, because the way they were acting was frankly embarrassing.
All of this took place in the same neighborhood. Never had to cross a street with a light. All within like 15 houses down of each other

My cousins my same age whom we visited often live on rural farmland on which they get to wander unsupervised all day. The suburbs are supposed to be safer than the fucking woods, that's why we moved here, no???

I remember some infographic a few years back showing how the area that children of different ages have to play in is steadily shrinking.

I guess in secondary school (11-16) my area of "biking to friends / going around doing random crap without a care in the world" was at least ten miles by ten miles. So a hundred square miles. (I do live in a very rural area.)

Yes, my parents would want to know where I would be and when I would be back, but that's OK. They also wanted to know who I would be with but I didn't have any psycho friends so that was never a problem.

That was quite a long time ago (long before mobile phones). I bet these days most children in their early teens don't even have ONE square mile to play in. Soon it will be the area of their bedroom, if it isn't already.

i'll add some more just 'cause.. so summers were all slip and slides and super soakers and water balloons and jumping off roofs into friend's pools (when we could get away with it)

nights, if would could get enough of us, we'd play manhunt, sort of a tag/hide and sneek hybrid. we played survivor shot (basically laser tag) too. otherwise just making crummy ramps and riding our skateboards/bikes over them (or yes roller skates)

gather at the ditch to smoke cigarettes and swing on ropes

and the mall. the mall! i feel so bad for people who didn't get to experience it at its peak. showing up with your friends and feeling super popular because you randomly encounter a group of your other friends! and then x-men or tmnt at the arcade

playing the beginning of castlevania on the nes and dying constantly and not caring about progression playing castlevania 2 and not knowing wtf to do and then your pal bought a STRATEGY GUIDE and ho-le-shit

Op. The movie takes place in 1959, not the 80s.

The 80s is when parents became more strict with kids going outside because of all the missing children killed and raped from pedos.

all the events happened during King's teen years, eg in the 1950s. Also, Doug (the cartoon) is also supposed to be in the same time period, with his sister being an original beatnik and Skeeter an original (not 1980s shitty revival) greaser

Now you have to worry the second they walk out the door because all of the stupid shit that goes on in the world now and could be raped and killed, or killed and raped, by cyborgs programmed by trannies to groom and sodomized them as seen in example below....
