The real reason is that traditional American homes are massive and spacious with sturdy hardwood flooring and tons of property outside, which is also utilized in social gatherings. Most Americans take their shoes off when alone but it wouldn't make sense to ask your party guests to remove theirs unless you lived in a small carpeted apartment

It's pretty common not to remove shoes in most of southern Europe.

The reason is that in warm weather shows act as a barrier to the guests sweaty feet.
Furthermore, demanding that the guests slremove their shoes is against the spirit of being a good host, you're supposed to do anything for your guests. Though this applies to less casual settings.

Last but not least, you are much less likely to have mud or snow on your shoes when the weather is not shitty 90% of the time
