After watching a few of the biggest "elevated horror" movies from the last decade, I just feel disappointed with normie's low expectations. Back in the day, horror movies were able to have themes while also supplying interesting subject matter or visuals, and these kinds of movies focus one to the detriment of the other. The results rarely even feel like horror movies.

It Follows, Talk To Me etc. All of them have le deep analogy (generally muh trauma/grief), are visually dark and bland as shit, have no humour and are extremely long and feature a moment or two of extreme, but boringly shot, gore. Smile 2 is just a cruel movie. If i recall correctly, you have the girl who came out of rehab trying to make a come back and prove critics wrong, improve herself. The smile demon makes her see shit until it looks like she is a junkie again, doing embarrassing shit she can't control, making her look unstable, relapsing druggie and she tries to fruitlessly to fight it and overcome it but the demon thing is like overpowered and just fucks with her life, reputation, legacy, mental state, relationships until it decides to kill her in the worst way possible. Its too cruel imo because it doesnt follow the usual moral contract of cruel people face cruel fates. Just hard to watch. Like why killing or abusing a puppy in a movie can make one feel worse than a human dying. Idk if that makes sense.

Not a zoomie and I love the Thing, in which they are believed to have overcome by sacrificing themselves to stop it. They were able to counter attack it, find out kind of how it works and stop it from leaving their isolated base, (maybe?). A small triumph for their circumstances.

The smile demon is just completely toying with its dinner pressing every pain point and there was no figuring it out just being tortured by it until its over. Definitely different than The Thing.

I will elaborate on this by saying is it really a horror movie or is it a torture movie? If there is a movie about a puppy being strapped to a table and being slowly poked and prodded and hurt until it dies, is that horror? The puppy has no agency, its just going to die painfully. And I always thought The Thing was pessimistic. You need to isolate it in a permafrost land while burnin it, and even then there was no guarantee it couldn't resurface with enough temperature if it wasn't destroyed enough.
