>Johnny Depp got paid $20M in 2015 to promote Dior Sauvage cologne
>Dior sold more than $10B worth of Dior Sauvage since then

How come everyone claims advertising doesn't work on them when evidence says it definitely does work?

I make my own cologne by dipping my balls into a plastic tub of ice water at night then splashing my face with said water in the morning. I could seriously market and sell this concoction as my man musk is that virulent but that'd undermine the whole ascetic principle behind the operation. Your advertising won't work here on me, Depp, but nice try.

I haven't bought it.... checkmate christians!

In all seriousness: what are those numbers? Is it 10 additional bns on top of previous revenue? Or is it that it just changed which products were selling? If there was just a slight uptick in total revenue, how much is accounted for by inflation and overall population growth? Did the total numbers for market shares available go up? Did Diors cut of that share go up by a significant number? If so was it just their competitors not having new products?

I can go on forever, lots of questions...

Advertising works really well on the people stupid enough to buy useless shit like luxury fragrances just because a celebrity told them to. Which is unfortunately a large percentage of the population.

This, also none of these NPC's go around stating advertising doesn't work on them. If anything they're very happy to tell you how they found out about and just how amazing it is!

When people say advertising doesn't work they usually mean "I just saw an ad for McDonald's but I didn't immediately buy one so it didn't work on me". What they don't realise is that one month later when they're hungry and too lazy to cook and order McDonald's, the only reason they thought to do that is because the constant marketing holds a sub-level awareness in your brain that something exists

>What they don't realise is that one month later when they're hungry and too lazy to cook and order McDonald's, the only reason they thought to do that is because the constant marketing holds a sub-level awareness in your brain that something exists
Or because their friend had ordered McDonalds recently, or because they had just watched The Founder, or any other reason.

The totality of causes of phenomena is inaccessible to the human mind. But the need to seek causes has been put into the soul of man. And the human mind, without grasping in their countlessness and complexity the conditions of phenomena, of which each separately may appear as a cause, takes hold of the first, most comprehensible approximation and says: here is the cause.

Used to be like that but now ads for men emasculate them or cast some ugly nog. Now they're in the high level "avoid" category.

Dior Pour Homme Intense smells better, and doesn't make you smell like a walking bag of STDs in a night club. And yeah advertising works. Ask American Eagle which had a massive profit surge in spite of the shitstorm of complainers.

I've owned many pairs of Adidas sneakers over my life, and every time I associate them with Mark Renton in Trainspotting
I've never had the red-and-white ones like his, usually black and white, but I always wished I was able to buy ones that looked more like Renton's
some of the most effective product placement I've ever seen.

I smelled Sauvage thinking it was all advertising. Smelling it out of the bottle I was unimpressed. Like it was a generic preppy fragrance. But after it sat on my skin for a while it was incredible. Genuinely impressed. It might be the only mass advertised fragrance I've ever liked.

Midwits like OP.
I'm really interested in advertising and believe I would have settled into a good career during the days of old school advertising and like to dissect ads for fun, and although a lot of ads don't affect me, I am still affected by some ads. I think a lot of it comes down to: are you interested in this product, yes or no? Someone who is interested in expensive aftershave or has the money to purchase it as a lazy gift for someone is immediatley susceptible to this ad. It's a form of hypnotism in a way, unless you're open to what they're selling it won't encourage you to buy unless you're a literal no-will goychattle.

Actually I go out of my way not to buy things when an ad annoys me for any reason. I thought back to an ad 30 days ago for something and because it pissed me off for whatever I decided deliberately to not pick up anything from there going home.

I've spoken to several people the same way. Advertising is not working the way people think any more. Now, instead of outright ads, it's better to hide them as tiktoks and shit

i mean, the cologne didn't need advertising it's one of the best colognes ever made. the only reason it's hated on is because it's way too popular so it's sort of justified. every other guy is wearing it so it's bad if you think about it. it will remind girls of their ex all the time and hate it. you should wear scents that seem somewhat unique to you.
