In the original story Quasimodo gets lynched for trying to kidnap Esmeralda on Frollo's orders, he then proceeds to spend the rest of the story stalking her and he, along with Gringoire, is directly responsible for Frollo capturing her, destroying the Court of Miracles and having her hanged.

I remember crying at the end of this film. Quasimodo went through all of that and didn't even wind up with a woman. It felt like such a kick in the crotch, man. He was kind to a fault. He just looked weird and was so desperate and lonely that he imagined hellish rock depictions were his only friends. For a man working a church to turn to rocks over Jesus is weird by itself. But still, man. I always felt like fictional characters had to have a piece of you in them for you to care. So why would you purposefully not give yourself a good ending? Literally my situation except I never purused her or had a crush on her cause I had no idea what she looked like for years. Now I have to explain to every girl I date why I have a kinda hot online female friend but she actually has nothing to worry about.
