I'm watching the 1st season of The Wire and I just got done watching the episode where DeAngelo teaches the younger kids chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor!

It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.

Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.

Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.

It's a series that has aged very poorly compared to The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, it lacks the moral dimension that both of those shows had and ultimately comes down to "muh systemic problems" as seen through the lens of libtards in the '00s.

Criminals are purely rational, self-interested agents being buffeted about by a system that has failed everyone, and as competent as the writing is for the most part you can see the beginnings of what would go on to be known as 'woke': Criminals giving their street talk review of The Great Gatsby, the Nation of Islam superman character, the lesbian cop who is the most macho one in the show but in a totally non-threatening way, all of this stuff that just feels off in a way that is radically more pronounced now.

It ultimately suffers because it has become all too apparent that the libtard policy for crime is just letting schizos commit dozens of felonies, releasing them onto the public and letting them rob/assault/terrorize/murder random people over and over again, and just pretending there is no solution to a problem that has the most obvious solution in the world. Singapore had figured it out decades ago.

It was made for a moment in time, it was competent propaganda for that time, but its ultimate purpose is to pretend that crime is just this intractable, unsolvable problem to explain why blue cities will inevitably just be shitholes forever.

This. People on the right/upper half of the bell curve, especially if segregated since college, tend to assume everyone has some rational reason to act the way they do. They come up with all kinds of systems to explain criminal behavior, but are usually just projecting their way of thinking onto others. If you've never been around truly stupid, poor, criminal etc. people, conceptionalizing how they operate is inherently counterintuitive.

And yet it's in blue states in deep blue cities where gangs is allowed to take over entire neighborhoods, it's in those cities where the death toll every year is higher than most wars. The whole "red states have higher crime rates" is also a dubious claim because it's entirely dependent on how you break down the stats and the criteria for inclusion for when a crime is a crime. For instance, is it counted when it happens, when it's reported, when an investigation is officially opened or when it's closed? Because plenty of states are playing games with that, just like they do with every political failure, so the politicians in charge gets to keep their career.

Let me guess, a Shield viewer? I can tell by your low IQ sentences and logic. I'm going to attempt to explain the point of the wire which no doubt your incel ass will struggle to comprehend.

Crime occurs not because people are inherently bad, but because the institutions and systems around them leave them no other choice but to commit crime.

It is often the case that primarily black demographic areas have the least funding and support due to institutional racism which leads to several black people committing crime, not inherently because of their race but because of a lack of funding and social programmes in majority black neighbourhoods, but if you watch the Wire you'll realise that these blacks are equally as intelligent (maybe moreso) than whites and the only reason they participate in crime is because society incentivises them to do so.

So in a nutshell, the sophisticated argument is not that "criminals commit crime" but that the institutions in America have failed its populations leaving them no other choice. Crime isn't solved by more policing or by punishing offenders, but by rehabilitating people who are like me and you but have been exposed to worse circumstances in life.

Honestly just try The Shield instead. Starts edgy and kinda trashy, but it has its own charm and it gets far better as it goes, specially by the time you'll hit S4 to the very end of the show. It eventually has the same level of writing as The Wire, but it's a lot more fun and realistic. Also I believe Breaking Bad basically ripped it off for the most part.
