In England....

The iconic music TV channel is closing five stations in the UK, including MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live, according to the BBC. These channels will go dark after Dec. 31, 2025.

Its flagship channel MTV HD will remain available in the region, though it mainly airs reality shows like β€œTeen Mom” and β€œGeordie Shore,” not music videos.

Mid 40s so this hurts me a little bit. Most of you have no idea the cultural impact this shit had. It wasn't just music videos, but the specific music centric shows (like Yo MTV Raps, 120 Minutes, etc), the live performances (Unplugged and whatnot), Spring Break, etc.

I never gave a shit about music, but Liquid Television, Beavis and Butthead, The State, Aeon Flux, Oddities (The Head/The Maxx), Cartoon Sushi, Sifl and Ollie, Celebrity Deathmatch, Tom Green, Jackass, Wildboyz, Fear, Scarred, and Wondershowzen were certified kino.

Speaking of Wildboyz, I met John Rhys-Davies at a convention over the weekend, and while he was signing my Middle-Earth map, I brought up his narration on that show, and he had no idea what I was talking about. He had completely forgotten about it.

I'm not gonna talk about Marx but there is definitely something correct about Marx's bit about how culture ultimately works itself into irrelevance and gets replaced.
When MTV started playing music videos music was dominated by Rock, Rap was a grimey underground music that didn't get too far out of Harlem, Electronic was dirty and didn't get too far from West Berlin and Michael Jackson was a kid.
Today rock is relatively irrelevant, Michael Jackson is dead and negatively associated with kids and rap and electronic dominate popular music and are being made by kids from everywhere from India to Indiana.
We don't get our music from the same places we got it from in the 80s and 90s. There's no NOW That's What I Call Music volume 556, just a Spotify Today's Hit's Playlist, if you want to watch Music Videos of your favorite new songs you go to Youtube.
How many people in MTV's former target Demographic even have Cable anymore?

Yeah, but those are also the places that have the most reliable information.
If a podcaster says something absurdly wrong it's just another day, if the NBC or the New York Times says something absurdly wrong there will be congressional hearings, it will be on the front page of a bunch of other papers, and there will be weeks of college courses in numerous fields devoted to talking about the scandal.

end of oppression. finally today much more independent creators are freed from the shakles of industry and proft-rates to publish their stuff on their own term.

MTV dying isnt a cause for despair. its a cause to cheer.

the era of corporate clone music, the era of "industrial culture reproduction", will come to an end.

the actual creators, freed from their technocratic, capitalist shackles, will flourish like never before.

the death of MTV is not a curse - its one of the signs of liberation of mankind. at last.

future generation will not have to climb through all the monopolized, structural shit genX and millenials have to climb through. (unless theyre retards).

that only shows your a common ignorant. nothing more. partly co-responsible for the society we have to live in today.

in short, for the TL;DR faction: marx said that a society will reporduce even their culture by "industrial means". MTV was one of these "means" in its prime. its prime has passed. it didnt stand the test of time and progress. thats not the end of capitalism. capitalism will change according to the social demands as long as their ist profit to make, policitans to buy or peeps allowing the 1% and their 9% lakeys to rule them in all eternity.

why not making thematic music programs with a presenter that narrates cool stuff before launching the videos.
something like a serialized show about music genres where they explain the history and evolution between the videos. Or a show about the coolest new artists right now. Stuff like that.

Definite shark-jumping moment. Not that they care. Like a previous anon pointed out MTV was always a Jew project to generate revenue and shape culture. They didn't take any of it seriously or hold it sacred. Just more profit margins to the merchants.

Music videos are expensive, labor-intensive, time-consuming, and high risk/high reward. Reality TV slop is cheap and easy and profitable. The entire industry bent to the siren call of reality TV. MTV was just always the biggest whore.

MTV essentially created a new, legitimate, exhilarating and exciting modern-era artform then let it languish and die because they found an easier way to make money by selling goyslop.
