Shutter Island feels like I'm watching Straight-To-DVD slop

Gladiator is an awful film and no one can change my mind. I liked A Beautiful Mind much more which came out just after but that one is forgotten.

A lot of movies that are acclaimed by casuals, but not by critics.
Most Oscar baits, really. Recently I watched a lot of these kind of movies and most of them were pretty bad.

I've seen more mentions of shutter island in the past week than the last decade what is going on in the borg mind of the internet lel.

12 Angry Men
Forrest Gump
Shawshank Redemption
The Dark Knight
Requiem for a Dream
Mean Girls
Clueless
10 Things I Hate About You (all three are really popular on letterboxd for some reason)
Good Will Hunting (absolutely awful)
Toy Story (Pixar in general)
Edward Scissorhands
The Searchers (why critics love it so much I can't understand)
Saving Private Ryan

All rightfully bad movies besides The Searchers. Toy Story especially is hugely overrated, the 3D is nothing like he revelation of their first 2D films, and it's a movie cartoon, not a fable or tale. It's a 6/10, like its sequels.

The Searchers I suppose get rated very highly for its "nuance", the rescue OR revenge of the girl, the marrying of viewpoints on the conflict and expansionism, the husk of a man he is due to his lifestyle of knowing his enemy has made him "like them", and so on. It's one of the top 5 westerns certainly.

This shit was a massive critical success but I found it completely unwatchable. Literally made me lose faith in movie critics and award shows.

Most of 2010s movies. At least the most popular ones on letterboxd.

Whiplash has insanely high rating - 4.42 while it's a 6.5-7/10 flick.
Half of the list is basically capeshit in various forms.

Gladiator didn’t age well. There was no point in Turing Joaquin into a gay sissy rapist. Why couldn’t he have been a competent fighter to give the final act of the movie some suspense? Even in the first few minutes we see Joaquin dirty and sword training and he seemed kind of threatening but then he gets soft retconned for the rest of the movie as a soft handed fag. Why write him as a soft handed fag and if you have to why write the scene with him seeming jacked and bad ass beating up three flunkies in a sparring match? Oh but he’s achoully really weak and gay. Ok so how weak and gay were his goons? Stupid character that ruined the movie imo

Old movies of this kind are generally overrated. Most of the time the plot doesn't even make that much sense.
I see no reason to rate North by Northwest higher than some Bond movies, or Mission Impossible.
