I doubt that it's the best Western, but it is kind of the Last Western. In the last remnants of the Wild West, people who lived through the 30 years that were the Wild West go through an empty and futile re-enactment of what was once normal and is now so aberrant it becomes entertainment. The writer guy was the audience.

In my pleb opinion it's the assassination of Jesse James. Might not have the grit of older westerns but you have to admit that train robber scene was pure cinematography.

Putting the western aspect of the movie aside, the neat little over-arching hero/villain swap this movie does is what has always interested me. It’s done so seamlessly.
I know it has to have been done before but I struggle to think of stories where this occurs.

It's not even a Western. It's an Eastern. The film's hero is an alcoholic mass murderer sent on some Boondoggle to murder a couple of cowboys who don't even deserve to die. And the badguy is an honourable sheriff who's trying to stop his town from descending into lawlessness and debauchery.
