i noticed a lot of the early talkies have an issue of too much talking. just because you can do one thing, you shouldnt do too much of it. some of the very early ones, like M for example strike a fine balance between completely silent scenes, adding to the dread and the exposition and plot moving dialogue heavy scenes

>When is something good going to happen?
Sometimes the most transformative experiences happen inside ourselves, but even those we have to set in motion. Try art projects, or even keep a review diary of every piece of literature/cinema you enjoy. In either case, you will not only have thoughts you never expected, but will feel more at peace with yourself as you get to know yourself.

If you liked that, try Argento's Deep Red. If you are ready for more after that . . . try Fulci, like The Gates of Hell Trilogy. Be warned about Fulci, be prepared -- he is really bad, but extremely soulful at the same time, unforgettable even.
>>215331067
I'm definitely going to watch more Argento, I'll watch either Deep Red or the Suspiria remake tonight. I've seen Inferno before, and I gave it a 6/10, but I'm willing to rewatch that as well. I've pretty thoroughly exhausted all the western horror that seems interesting to me, so I'm glad that I've barely scratched the surface of foreign horror.

Deep Red is good, but it's not a horror and it's very different than Suspiria. Inferno is his second most beatifully looking film, but it's not that great otherwise. I would recommend Tenebre and Opera for now.
Also Suspiria remake is an absolute dogshit and possibly the worst movie ever made.

Opening scene from A Serious Man is the best example of what I'm looking for, but it's only few minutes long.

the remake mogs tf out of it. btw.. what is it with horror films and god tier remakes? i feel like only in this specific medium and particular genre you get remakes that are far superior to the source material, to the point where it's almost unquestionable.
off the top of my head the thing, the fly, the blob, the ring, the grudge, dawn of the dead, evil dead, it, the hills have eyes, little shop of horrors, and body snatchers all clear the og film.
there's exceptions of course (mostly slashers lol), but it's interesting because with other genres you get plenty of autists who swear by the original. meanwhile with horror you got many dudes who go "yah the original sux dick lol"

There's a female member of the gang who isn't a victim. The mom also bites the dude's penis off, that's like the reverse of misogyny, or at least revenge for any earlier in the film.
The other anon last night was probably right about Slumber Party massacre since it was meant to be a feminist film but the feminist parts got cut, leaving parts that were meant to be satire.

because horror works best when its atmospheric and looks a specific way.
old boomer flicks all look like they were filmed on mobile phone cameras with no studio lights and nothing done in post, so theyre all overly bright. therefor its not scary.

kind of irrelevant what a film is trying to be. what is is matters. at some point though it's apples and oranges.
I like both in different ways, 2013 has one of the best endings of all time. the original to me though is the ideal template for a good bunch of horror films. wouldn't change a word of dialog, perfect 85 minute cut but still all the character development you need etc.

Okay, present an argument on how the drill he kills them with being a "phallic symbol" makes it a feminist movie. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I don't get what the metaphor is or what they meant by that and I think it's one of those 'parts' left over from the original concept that means nothing in the actual version of the film.

He kills people by penetrating them with the drill. One of the girls literally castrates his drill in the end of the movie. You can't get any more phallic imagery than this in any other slasher movie.

The true villain is toxic masculinity.
Not a joke or assumption, that was the intent and the major recurring "praise" for it in positive reviews I'm looking at. It's a basic murder mystery good for a episodic tv series wrapped around the writers tangenting about how awful and stupid men are and have always have been.
And I can't imagine even someone who likes that messaging not dropping the movie halfway through because of how UTTERLY insufferable the main character is. He's a cop who is an insane raving alcoholic asshole who is constantly flying into rages or outright attacking people because they said some minor slight, questioned him over him behaving like a raving psychopath, or literally providing crime evidence that doesn't align with his assumptions. The entire point of the movie is painting how awful he is and how deserving he is of all the takedowns the female characters give him (who of course he doesn't attack or scream at). I spent most of the movie wondering why the fed wasn't being called in just for his behavior nevermind the serial killings.
And this is most of the movie, as it meanders around the murder mystery which spoiler who cares it's just some guy who wasn't built up and isn't a werewolf.

PCP is unexplainably released into the Frankfurt water supply and sends the zoo inhabitants crazy. One evening after a malfunction of zoo security the gonzo critters rampage through the city eating and killing whatever they fancy, wreaking a night of bloody terror. Itβs up to regular Italian-trash whipping girl Lorraine De Selle and obnoxious Super Mario lookalike zookeeper John Aldrich to sort it out.

Always felt weird about that one, way too androgynous. But maybe that was the point because around the time it came out, there'd been a huge rumor about Jamie Lee Curtis being a troon, and in a few films such as Terror Train worked into the themes.

Yeah, a weird one I found and posted before, the main actress in Blood Harvest was never in another movie. But the weird part is when I looked her up all I could find were a couple blogs about how she disappeared and nobody has been able to find her and her imdb says this
>After production and its release, no further information about her has been found. To this day as of February 2021, people are still trying to find her, or find what happened to her.

I think both are horror movies.
You could call them thrillers if you want but I think they're too gory and are clearly trying to scare the audience during some scenes. They're not like Se7en where most of the horror is off screen.
Both obviously mix genres though with some black comedy and police procedural elements.
