Jesse James and his gang rob a train, then Jesse gets paranoid about getting caught and slowly goes crazy over it, lashing out at anyone he suspects of being a traitor to him.
This all coincides with Robert Ford, a kid who idolizes Jesse, joining his gang. As Jesse slips into more and more paranoia, the heroic and idealistic image of Jesse fades from him.
Its a really good movie about mythological ideas about others. Comparing how Jesse was treated in life and death to Robert Ford is interesting. Its meant to be poetic, not really "smart people" talk
