No, the movies/miniseries don't do a really good job explaining what he actually is. He's weak. He's a frail thing from the beginning of time who has to lurk in the shadows and prey on children because of how weak he really is. Imagine the most pitiful cosmic horror you can imagine, curled up over in the corner waiting for some dumb kid to walk by. He has to rely on fear to paralyze children so he can kill them. He's so weak he has to take decades long naps after he hunts just so he doesn't die. And the lights are basically a last ditch effort when fear isn't working on a kid. If he busts that shit out he's desperate
