Agreed. I was going to say the zilla design isn't all bad, but it's awful. It somehow looks more like a man in a lizard suit than the ones where it's very much a man in a lizard suit. Look at how those forelimbs in OP bend.

One aspect I liked about this Godzilla was its origin. To go from a small iguana to that was genuinely cool. But there's much better Godzilla movies overall.

another glorious david arnold score AND a fantastic soundtrack album that everybody and their mom bought back then
great creature design
it's actually pretty kino overall, it just shouldn't be called Godzilla and it goes off the rails at some point with the baby zillas and turning into the Lost World on steroids

It's impossible to fly your helicopter higher when a giant lizard is chasing you.

I think lessons like that are important for helicopter pilots. Thanks, Emmerich!

IT IS VERY GOOD OVERALL.

(CONS!)

> Lack of classic Godzilla's aggressiveness & invulnerability.

> Arguably too much time playing Jurassic Park with the babies (I was fine with it)

> Arguably too much time spent on romance (didn't bother me the last time I watched it)

> CGI for the babies doesn't hold up.

(PROS!)

> God tier score & opening credits.

> Great first attack on NYC, handled in a realistic disaster manner similar to how Gamera 3 handled it although less bleakly.

> Fantastic submarine battle.

> Good Helicopter chase.

> Cool military porn that isn't ever "America fuck yeah-ish"

> Godzilla's death scene is extremely well done regardless of the disappointment of him being killed by normal missiles.

> Godzilla's classic nuclear origin & nature remains intact they just swapped America for France.

> Decent to good overall cast. Reno is solid. Broderick is a bit meek but still a likable enough non annoying lead.

> Zilla's design is solid just not for being Godzilla.

> CGI for the adult Godzilla holds up reasonably well.

> Practical effects for the babies is decent (their heads are a bit oversized).

(External opportunities it presented & took advantage of!)

> Spawned the fantastic animated series.

(External opportunities it denied us!)

> It assfucked us out of the beautiful looking Stan Winston (rip) Godzilla movie.

i thought the heli chase was goofy. the cgi of the POV shots going down the city streets looks like a windows 98 wallpaper, and why the hell didn't the pilot just fly up? also, what's with the pilot saying he had missile lock, misses and blows up the chrysler building, then the next second he goes "sidewinders can't lock, sir - he's as cold as the buildings around him." why tf would he fire the initial missiles?

I liked the Jamiroquai song and that cover of the Bowie song though. That was a weird phase I went through, starting with either Beavis and Butthead Do America or Space Jam, where I would get the soundtracks for every major movie release. The Lost World, Men in Black, Spawn, Armageddon, Godzilla, TPM, The Matrix, Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me, Spider-Man, Shrek, Attack of the Clones, the Friday movies, and a bunch more that I’m forgetting. I think it tapered off after Matrix Revolutions and Return of the King, as real life began to take hold.

No, take a walk with your revisionist history. They were trying to make it more β€œrealistic”, because they thought a mainstream normie audience just associates Godzilla with campy Godzilla vs Megalon shit, so they went as far in the opposite direction as they could, and tried to make it β€œrealistic”, while also making sure to make the entire cast comedic doofuses in order to constantly turn and wink to the audience, assuring them that they’re totally in on the joke.

A trap that I think the Monsterverse has now fallen into as well. Not the attempts at realism, but the really bad attempts at making it all a quipfest.

Normies hate it. Just like bat nipples clooney batman. It's amazingly comfy. Just being alive during that time and watching stuff like this as a young person that's so much fun. I think this is one of the best movies ever honestly just for that. It's like thinking back to the 90s and early 2000s when you remember walking on the streets and running into people you knew and just hanging out. If nothing else was good about that time, that would make it better than our current time alone, just like godzilla nostalgia makes it special movie.

babe probably sold 200 times more VHS copies than Godzilla 98 though so they must be a lot easier to find, but then I guess people will be less likely to sell off their babes too, also some of those are a different movie.

It has a pretty good marketing campaign, especially the teaser trailer with the old guy on the dock, which was better presented than it was in the finished film.
The soundtrack was also surprisingly decent, with one of Rage Against the Machine’s best tracks, where they’re basically just taking the money and slagging off the product
