Cuckmann has always rubbed me the wrong way even during the YouReviewer days like 15 years ago. To call his critiques shallow is an understatement.

That being said he leveraged a middling youtube channel that was entering the twilight of its lifespan into a feature film that's doing well all things considered. This was never going to be a good movie, it's obvious he isn't a talented or even competent writer. But the fact that it's an actual movie and not a complete joke is a victory. I wonder if the studios will push him to not write the next thing he makes since it seems unlikely his next project will be able to leverage his audience to get as much of a pop and what everybody is shitting on is the bad writing.

I thought it was an alright spooky movie, it’s competently made on a technical level - especially for a freshman effort. Its problems lie with the script. Movie reviewers always shit on horror movies for having retarded characters, so why the fuck did Chris make a movie where the protagonist acts like a moron? She’s convinced her sister was being haunted by a demonic entity, had proof of the demonic entity stalking her, and just decides to go to a haunted prison in the dead of night? I get that she feels a sense of urgency, but with confirmed knowledge of an active demonic entity at work, nobody would DARE go to that prison at night much less alone. Then when she witnesses that the demon is actively following her, she goes to a literal ghost town ALONE AT NIGHT. Where is your fucking husband? Do you not have any friends you could ask for help? How about Keith David, sure he’s old but he sure seemed ready to believe in the supernatural at work, his ass could have helped if you’d asked.

Don’t even get me started on Mia literally seeing a demonic baptism of a rape baby and just proceeding to act like there’s nothing to be worried about with the kid.

I learned that last one after the credits started to roll and I was wondering why the film ended 80 minutes after it started, given Regal listed a runtime of 1h42m. At first I thought Cuckmann had almost 20 minutes of credits at the end of his movie, but I googled and found a theater manager on reddit who said that he was informed by his superiors of the now shorter runtime and the requirement to adjust showtimes accordingly.

I’m immensely curious what’s missing and would love to see the original pre-Neon cut and the original post-Neon cut.

I'm wondering about the future career prospects of Stuckmann. One the one hand this is getting a pretty middling to bad reception, on the other it was so cheap that it'll leverage his online fame to make a small profit. There is the fact that half the movie's budget comes from crowdfunding, which I can't see him pulling off a second time. The movie at best has basic level technical competence, and the worst thing about it is the screenplay. Chris does his whole humble guy act but he has an ego, he's already touting his 7 other scripts that he's written, I don't think he wants to be a hired hand.

Plenty of people direct movies, a lot of them struggled to get the opportunity, Stuckmann isn't unique just because he's a known internet personality. That’s interesting to me, because like I said, Derek Mears wasn’t added until this years reshoots with the new, professional Hollywood editor. So whatever version was shown last year couldn’t have had the demon in it, at least not in the capacity or form we have in the finale cut.

And yeah, I doubt the ten minutes of missing footage is interesting, but I’d still be curious to see it given the behind the scenes nature of the film.

The entire reason this movie exists is because Chris has such a sunk cost fallacy mindset about being a filmmaker because he literally left mormonism and his entire family of origin to become a "filmmaker". Thus this is the result of someone who just desperately wants to be known as a filmmaker through whatever means it takes.
This movie does not exist out of artistic vision or any kind of creativity at all but merely so Chris can tell himself that he's a filmmaker. That's genuinely all he cares about.
