Haven't kept up with this show at all.

What was the reception like?

First season is watchable. They make some weird changes from the game but it keeps close enough to the source material. It probably depends how much you like the game.

Second season is a total shit show that turns a already weak sequel into a CW-tier teen drama.

I gave up after 2 and half episodes.

Bella Ramsey is ugly as fuck

Season 2 feels like it was adapted by someone who didn't play the game. Who missed that Ellie's arc = killing a lot of people.
Which is inexcusable when it was co-written and co-produced by the same guy who did the game

What did they change?

Tess gets molested by an infected in her final moments, instead of just getting shot.
Bill's town section is replaced with a series of flashbacks of him and Frank, sort of a standalone little movie. It's good but detached from the rest of the show and could be removed without changing anything.
Henry has an added backstory that makes him less sympathetic.
When Joel gets badly injured, he's simply stabbed in the gut instead of falling and getting impaled on rebar, it feels really cheap compared to how the game did it.
Infected spores are removed, because at the time they didn't want actors wearing masks. Instead of spores they have tendrils which link the infected together through the ground, like a hivemind. Though Season 2 would bring back spores and make the cordyceps fungus evolution completely nonsensical-
>real world cordyceps spreads among arthropods solely through spores
>it makes the leap to humans, switches to transmission via biting and forgets how to make spores, even though it's a highly advantageous trait for a pathogen
>it suddenly remembers how to make spores again 25 years later

Weirdest thing is probably giving the infected weird mouth tendrils and getting rid of spores (which they bring back in S2). They made Sarah and Maria black. They made younger black kid you meet in Philly deaf (they changed Philly to Kansas City too). They never meet Bill, instead the episode is a long melodramatic story about him and Frank meeting and their relationship which ends with them ultimately deciding to kill themselves. That's off the top of my head.

So both Joel and Tommy fucked black women canonically?

Why

The first season was okay, around 6/10. It was basically a complete copy-paste of the game, with only a few random new elements, like the gay couple, who had bad acting, cringe-worthy sexual scenes and dialogue. YouTubers also jumped on the bandwagon, monetizing fake emotional reactions and simply copying reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. It seems like YouTube reviewers often take the easiest route, copying Rotten Tomatoes, which tends to give 100% ratings for episodes like this. It's not recommended to watch with the family because of the scenes, they will think you're gay.

In the second season, people started to get a little fatigued with Pedro Pascal (he was in so many movies and TV shows), and Bella Ramsey became less appealing. She didn’t look older but become uglier and not fit for Ellie not because of ugliness but because she doesn't have the minimum fitness for the character and scenes of action, and they seemed to try to be more 'woke' than the original Last of Us game, which already had some 'woke' moments that were subtle and more natural. The push for wokeness felt like an attempt to overcompensate for Ellie not being physically fit for action scenes, not looking right for the character, and her acting not being great.

People also started bullying her in the second season, while she wasn’t really bullied in the first.

The first season was pretty good, the second was meh, but the ending was very good.

The set piece stuff was good, like the fight in the town where joel is sniping while ellie runs through the big shitfight was cool.
But yeah ellie was so ugly and distracting. I guess it makes sense since he doesn't like her in the game until she grows on him. They didn't know how to do that with dialog and acting so they chose an ugly actor that you "get used to" and grow to like, just like joel. Only it didn't work.
(I didn't even hate the gay episode, just skipped the buttsekks and watched the parts where he maintains his outpost and has brunch with joel and the sexy milf.
