I spot you your obvious gaffe, without a father. The character is an asshole, and not really a hero, but he's not a monster either. I myself am not a father, so when I first watched the real duel, I didn't immediately get it. I had to read a thing which reminded me that he himself was a father and had experienced the supreme loss of having his own kid die in possibly Kubrick's most emotional set-piece, he did love lady Lyndon despite being an asshole to her, and he could not possibly kill her other child, because then she really would commit suicide for real this time. He hates Bullingdon, but again, he's not a monster, he understands all of this. This is why he fires into the ground. At the same time, he did fuck up Bullingdon's shit in early childhood. I think the two came away from each other about as well as could reasonably be expected.
All right, you men. Just keep marching straight forward into French enemy fire. That's the way.
