I recently beat Engage for the first time and I greatly enjoyed it.
I fucking HATED the weightless, impactless attacks in Three Houses so I was very glad to see that Engage felt more like the other 3D Fire Emblem games I had played before.
Music is fucking fantastic too.

Fire Emblem Engage is a mess. The art direction is way over the top, with characters looking like rainbow-colored dolls. Alear, the protagonist, has this ridiculous red-and-blue hair that looks like they fell headfirst into a Slush Puppie machine. It’s hard to take the story seriously when your main character looks like candy.

The plot is bland and shallow. It’s the same old "light vs dark" fantasy story but stripped of any depth or nuance. It doesn't even try to reach the emotional or political complexity of older games like Path of Radiance or Three Houses. It feels like it was written for ten-year-olds or mobile game fans who don’t care about worldbuilding.

The new Emblem system is just nostalgia bait. You summon old lords like Marth and Ike, but they’re not real characters, just stat-boosting ghosts. It’s hollow fanservice and distracts from any attempt at developing the actual cast.

Speaking of the cast, most characters feel like walking anime stereotypes. Their support conversations are full of fluff and awkward personality quirks instead of real development. It’s hard to care about them when they feel so artificial.

Then there’s the Somniel. It’s full of pointless mini-games like fishing, push-ups, and ring-polishing. It’s not fun, it’s just busywork. It feels more like a parody of Persona’s downtime than a meaningful hub area.

Maps are flat and uninteresting. The game leans on gimmicks and Emblem abilities instead of rewarding good tactics. It’s either too easy or unfair depending on how much you rely on the system.

Engage looks like Fire Emblem, but it doesn’t feel like Fire Emblem. It’s flashy, loud, and empty. A game made to sell merchandise, not to be remembered.

i've still never managed to finish a fire emblem game, tried awakening, fates, three houses and engage. should i just try and go back for one of the older ones since they are probably shorter? i really want to get into this franchise but i'm too retarded for the gameplay, i think.

I mean it's conceivable to get all 4 in a single child paralogue, if you plan for it - a 10-15 minute time investment. I had no idea who made the patch, just that if I went to some shady website and followed the instructions, I too could play FE6 in English.
