Why were these remakes so divisive among old fans?

They felt the need to make Crash and Spyro take 5 minutes of your time at every load screen. Odd artistic choice.

Crash remake was fine other than a few gameplay issues they fixed quickly with a patch

The best I can say about the Crash remakes is that they could have been worse.

The normalized geometry/physics cause some problems but are not a total deal-breaker, the art style is absolutely worse than the original, but not offensive to the eyes. The soundtrack; some tracks were raped like the Makin' Waves, some sound great like Rock It, most are just acceptable.

I liked the spyro remake, but the art direction was kind of shit and the censored so many things that were just off. like they censored one of the npcs using a cattle prod on another npc's ass. Like it was like censoring ed ed and eddy, it was very bizarre

Crash remakes had the benefit of being worked on by previous developers with a history of working on the IP. All Toys for Bob did was make that ugly Skylanders shit. It makes a world of difference. You can tell where one party tried and the other was detached from what the Spyro games should look and play like.

The Crash remakes look good but they slightly changed his movement mechanics so that I still prefer to play the originals. If you are young and play the remakes as your first Crash experience it's probably fine though. But weirdly I really like Crash 4's mechanics, which one would assume would be the same. I'm not totally sure if that's just a mental thing or if Crash 4 just plays better than the remakes.

The Spyro remakes are a large downgrade in visual style but in contrast to Crash I think they actually improve the actual gameplay mechanics (mostly) to the point where I prefer them to the originals. All of the originals lack right analog stick camera movement which makes them a lot less fun for me. The one exception is Spyro 3 which has a center camera button which makes it manageable. But overall despite losing a lot of that unique dreamlike atmosphere of the originals the remakes are fun enough to play that it's my go to "I just want to turn off my brain and run around and jump" game.

I didn't play the originals before the NST. I got stuck on the biker levels in NST, but when I played the original I cleared it first try. Is it harder in NST?

Crash NST was great although not as good in some aspects, and something about Crash 3 just doesn't feel as cool as it does on ps1, still good. CTRNF is fucking phenomenal thoughever.
I had fun with the spyro remakes playing it the first time when it came out, but in hindsight it was a pretty shit remake and TfB are a pretty ass studio.
