Normal line: "If you can get some fuel canisters, then I can reactive the main generator and get our shields back up. I marked the objective on your map"
Millennial line: "Heyyyy buddy, great job killing all those mutants and all. You're really good at that! Shooting things, that is. One problemo though, as it turns out a bunch of monsters on the planet are gonna tear our eyes out if we don't get the shield back up. And this is just my opinion, but that's gonna suck. Not having eyes sounds terrible! Like, how am I supposed to read my collection of "Bodacious Space Babes" without any flippin' eyeballs? So here's my brilliant plan that I got written on this here napkin. There's this generator-thing. You following me? And it needs GAS! Who knew? So mayyybe, you can go out and fetch some canisters. And then we can get the generator running, and then the shield will go back up, and we won't get horribly viciously murdered! Doesn't that sound great? I know, right? So, since I did most of the work coming up with the plan, I was thinking you can do the last step and get the cannisters. If you see any monsters, shoot them in the face or something. Oh and one more tip: try not to get killed. That'll put a wrench in this plan- metaphorically that is. Not literally. I hate people who misuse the term "literally", it drives me FIGURATIVELY insane. Anyway I'll just be here, cowering in my bunker while you go do that. Go team badass!"

>>712538091They grew up with the top zogged hollywood, disney and comics.
They grew up with basically dumbed down media made for mass consumption rather than being art by merit alone.
It's still mostly Gen X writing/late millenials inspired by Gen X writers.
Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Aaron Sorkin, Shane Black etc. all Gen X writers who popularized the quippy style of writing that has inspired videogame writers as well. Lots of the writers writing AAA games are still Gen X, some are early millenials.
>>712538091Most of the writers currently are millennials, particularly deep democrat state college graduates, and the writing heavily relies on the cultural hallmarks of the generation. Sarcasm, self referential humour, and an almost psychotic drive to break up any moment with a glimmer gravitas with mood shattering jokes, that's without getting into the lowbrow political commentary they learned as a kneejerk reaction from hours of college lectures from ex hippie baby boomer professors that landed tenure.

>>712543026You are deluded if you think the next generation will be any better though.

>>712544564You should know what college is like. >>712537989Millenials haven't been the target audience for the past decade
>>712538091Itโs millennial commie more than anything
>>712544740The issue has nothing to do with college. if anything, the problem is not enough people getting into writing from college. Media is too inbred. Past generations of writers came from diverse backgrounds. Somebody writing superhero comics nowadays got into it because they read superhero comics.
I wonder how fucking bad the original was if this revision was thought to be good
>>712543397>popular culture is just insanely inbredI agree, but video games weren't meant to reference popular culture, at least not in the general case. Look at games like Dishonored for example. The game simply exists on its own. It doesn't make quips, it doesn't mention the latest viral tik tok video or flavor of the month political flashpoint. There are like five jokes in the whole game and they all come from the two scientists; none of those jokes referenced popular culture. In fact, the entire point of the game - and the point of any Role Playing Game - is to bring you to a new environment. The reason why current gen western games have such awful stories and writing is that they are obsessed with NEVER leaving the environment of the current zeitgeist. The result is that every game just feels like a set: the same society we live in now just with some decorations hung up to match the theme of the story. This isn't to say that previous gens didn't leak their social context into their games but it wasn't (at least as much of) a conscious and intentional decision. In fact if anything they tried *not* to do this.
>>712544970Anon, just stop

>>712545372>children still die of starvation and povertyBro the starving african child line is done. They have more people than all of europe combined, non whites included, and are rapidly increasing.
>>712545098I feel that's just a issue with fantasy in general. Japan, Korea, and China are really no better. 99% of Japanese fantasy is just Dragon Quest but not funny. It's just a shitty genre unless we have people with actual diverse backgrounds coming in to give it a kick up the ass. Which, sadly, i doubt will happen especially as people continue to divide it into subgenres.
Like, most people would call Dishonored Urban fantasy before they would call it fantasy.
>>712545190I don't intend to start writing games, but I do want to publish a novel eventually.
>>712539665The fact that Isabella creates this huge scene about not creating a scene, and then only does 5 pushups (not the 10 she said she would) is pretty amazing writing, honestly.
It's not intentional, but I like it all the same.
>>712538091>>712538343>>712538442>>712538847>>712542520>>712544090Millennial writing is not writing *by* millennials, millennials make zoomer games
Itโs writing *for* Millennials, by Gen X writers who saw young millennials use Tumblr back in the day, had their perception of young people cemented, and now they try to appeal to the youths with it
>>712545098 (me)
Also this isn't to say that good writing cannot reference the politics or social norms of the writer. There are plenty of good examples of that. But these writers are not nearly skilled enough to do that and doubly so for games that are not even meant to take place in other points in history or other worlds such as veilguard. Dragon age is mean to take place in a medieval fantasy world. So now you would have to combine medieval, fantasy, AND pop culture all into one, which is not an easy task, and even if you did it the most "right" way possible many wouldn't like it simply because the combination itself is problematic. It's like giving a 5 star chef a jar of anchovies and sour candy and telling him to make the best of it. Those things just do not mix well to begin with.

>>712547170Nobody cares about mutts.
>>712547170>kids in the states are dying of poverty tooNo they aren't. The poorest, most disabled person in the US is still richer than the average African. In fact obesity is correlated with being poor in the US. In 2022 there were 1,400 "malnutrition related" deaths, which is more broad than actual starvation. There are more deaths due to anorexia than that per year at more than 10k, and this seems to be a separate count than malnutrition, but I'm not sure that the "malnutrition" deaths are being distinguished accurately. And it also includes old people, not just kids. Nobody is poor in the US except homeless drug addicts. There are just people that are jealous of others, which is not the same as being poor.

>>712538091It's just a new way to by racist in an "acceptable" way, people not longer judge you by your skin color (in public) now they judge you based of what generation you were born into.
>>712543560>>712560534The writers should be executed, tortured first.

>>712561137For the record Im on your side, retard, Im jist pointing out that properly defining a word isnt as easy using a word to describe itself or pointing to something and saying "THAT THING"
>>712561139Most people are alwasy sincere, they always will be.
Post-modern irony is a disease among the "le artiste" class, the poseurs, not actual creators.
>>712543469>TWAS BUT A JESTDamn, we've been had, chud-bros~
>>712543469Oh. So it was ironic cringe, instead of sincere cringe.
Well, that somehow fixes everything.
I don't understand why people work on medieval fantasy games if they despise medieval and fantasy. They can deconstruct all they want, but still despise it in the end.
>>712561953they just hate escapism and feel preaching their ideology is the entire point of art

>>712561953For the same reason why Bungie had people who hate the millitary lead on halo, and Firewalk had people who hate guns work on Concord and Ubisoft had people who hate the police work on Rainbow six.
It's more important than the money to them.
>>712543469Then let my character make fun of it
Oh wait you can't disagree with any of that shit
>>712561953For a while lefties have been struggling to agree how to counter people spamming "RETVRN" memes talking about how many aspects of society prior to today's peak clown world were superior. One popular method is to suggest that actually every society across all of history was exactly like new york city. The fact that this flies in the face of literally everything doesn't matter, they think if they create enough black king arthurs and trans kweens they will brainwash enough people for it to have been worth it.

>>712538785the more i think about this the more it sounds like my dad, he will never ask help, but he will complain you didn't help if you're in the same vicinity, the best he can do is say
"waahhhh this thing is damn heavy! there sure out to be someone who's young and healthy unlike me to help lift this box for me!"
"dad you want help?"
"nahhhh don't wanna bother you, but if i could get a hand that would really help my back because i'm old and not young anymore i can't be doing these things i used to do when i was your age"
he's 71, and makes sure it's as offputting as possible every single time since i was born
>>712537687 (OP)Modern rpgs are written for the critical role audience. Hence all the modern slang and endless marvel quips.

>>712543469Way to go, sis! That's probably why they had that tense background music and overly dramatic "WhY Am I NOt EnOUGh 4 (YOu)?" line: so people would know they were just breaking the ice.
Regardless, we are just laughing at you. Nobody is mad. Here is a gory video to make things better.
