I agree, but video games weren't meant to reference popular culture, at least not in the general case. Look at games like Dishonored for example. The game simply exists on its own. It doesn't make quips, it doesn't mention the latest viral tik tok video or flavor of the month political flashpoint. There are like five jokes in the whole game and they all come from the two scientists; none of those jokes referenced popular culture. In fact, the entire point of the game - and the point of any Role Playing Game - is to bring you to a new environment. The reason why current gen western games have such awful stories and writing is that they are obsessed with NEVER leaving the environment of the current zeitgeist. The result is that every game just feels like a set: the same society we live in now just with some decorations hung up to match the theme of the story. This isn't to say that previous gens didn't leak their social context into their games but it wasn't (at least as much of) a conscious and intentional decision.
