There have been lots of games with regions and ecosystems that players could heavily impact or influence. All of them have heavily involved open PvP so they have all failed, shut down, or have small niche communities that most people will refuse to engage with. Open PvP is required for this kind of engagement, but it is highly unpopular, so it will never go mainstream. The closest thing you'll get is modern "PvP" MMOs where PvP is either limited in scope or consent-only, which means the core of the game is still just a theme park.

Games like you want require putting players in powerful positions and to do that requires allowing players to sort out who gains and loses powerful positions via the core gameplay. A game where the most powerful player position is

This is the fundamental problem with stories about games, especially MMOs (Overlord, .hack, SAO, Log Horizon, Ready Player One, etc.). .hack maybe gets a pass for being largely written in a time before mass proliferation of wikis and datamining, but the games in these stories are positioned like fully independent fantasy worlds, with mysteries and secrets that nobody has ever seen. Except that's not what happened. Overlord at the beginning takes place in a future distopia, where the outside world is toxic and requires masks and air filters to use when leaving your home. DMMOs in that world are super massive, but the main reason why stuff was unexplored is because of the community. For example, many new non-human race players would get PK'd constatly at starting areas until they quit, leaving to the humanoid (non-monster races) population to have a high advantage.

Overlord itself has a lot of problems, but this is done exactly to mirror Ainz's adventure in the New World. The humans ended up getting racial superiority and all the nobles just don't do shit but rule, so 70% of the world is a mystery.

The anime leaves out a lot of world building and important details. The manga explains how dead bodies create negative energy that can eventually spawn undead by DEFAULT, which is why graveyards (large areas of land filled with bodies) require bodyguards to take out the low level undead that will spawn. If these low level of undead remain, them just being there raises the negative energy, which will spawn stronger undead, and so on. Enough skeletons in an area can spawn a necroswarm giant (pic related). The anime doesn't explain any of this. There's even an unspoken rule within warring kingdoms and tribes to allow for troops to roam battle lands after a fight has taken place and clean up the dead bodies without being harmed by the opposing sides, since leaving a shitload of dead soldiers will cause trouble for everyone.

I'm sorry, I tried to get into Overlord, but everything about this anime is so jarringly at odds with itself that I eventually dropped it out of sheer frustration. It tries so hard to do so many things at once too that it fails to excel at any one thing. Tries to be super edgy yet at the same time attempts to provide moments of levity while clearly not being a dark humor anime. Whole show foments this thematically dissonant mess that never quite immersed me with its narrative nor captivated me with its borderline schizophrenic protagonist. Where do I even begin?

For all and intents and purposes, it starts off pretty generically and innocuously. Some dude gets trapped in a virtual MMO world. Sounds fine. Seems copacetic. Is it going to be one of those isekais in which the protagonist spends more time having fun and not worrying about trying to return to his world? Or is it going to be more about investigating what got him trapped inside to begin with while eking out a way to survive? The show made me think it was going to a bit of both. Hell, the guy clearly has a "normal person" voice and a voice that he only uses in front of the NPCs. But 90% of the time he uses his scary character voice. And it's like he forgets that this is just an MMO 90% of the time as well. The show seemingly wants me to forget all of this. Because the overarching story is really non existent. There's really nothing tying all of these sub plots altogether. Many of these arcs just involve the protagonist being an unlikeable edgelord and playing god (more like Satan) and being a murderous little shit to the NPCs around him. Imagine CLU from Tron Legacy, only you're supposed to cheer for him as the protagonist.

I genuinely don't understand how I am supposed to feel about Ainzmongold Am I supposed to be rooting for him to get untrapped from the MMO? To get it on with the succubus? Am I supposed to be laughing heartily as he tortures and murders would-be plunderers to his domain?

Spawned undead can be anything. Zombies from what I understand is rare. The negative energy itself just gives birth to creatures. Kingdoms and cities usually have guards posted to drop any low level undead every night. I assume small towns aren't big enough for small graveyards to spawn them as often. It's never clarified if dead bodies after they rot into skeletons still create negative energy too. Maybe they do, but not by a lot. The necroswarm giant was only spawned because a powerful undead (originally a human, anime gave ZERO backstory to him) was fucking around in the city's graveyard to overrun the city with undead.

Undead spawn. The bodies don't come back up. You claim to have read the novels but don't understand how clearly they explained the process of negative energy and undead spawns. Dead bodies create negative energy. Undead spawn from that. The kind of undead vary based on that level. As said like four times, the undead issue is not a problem. Undead outbreaks are implied to rarely ever happen. It takes like 2 guards to drop some skeletons every night. Basic skeletons are weak. Why did anime get flooded with isekai stuff? Most of it isn't very good. Years ago I remember reading an article or something that mentioned it had to be banned in some sort of yearly JP LN competition because so many entries were isekai.
I stopped reading manga as it was getting big around 10 or so years ago, but when I looked at a manga website recently, it felt like half the fantasy section had either video game mechanics, or isekai.

The movie is fun, but the novel does some more world building. All the enemies in that, aside from basic monsters (and the tribe lords) are in on it, so they're all pushing runes. The reason why they're trying to so blatantly is because Ainz gave demiurge a small request to help him push it a bit, and Demiurge likely made it so everyone had to bring it up in order to help Ainz. It's done for comedic effect, but not as memey as in the movie.

This isn't "oh caves in the wilderness spawn goblins or demon bears or whatever" where there are logistical problems to nipping this in the bud. Yes, that happens. It's explained there's ruins and old cities that have them everywhere because of this. But again, it requires a set amount of negative energy. A single dead body or a couple separated by great distances won't count. I doubt a skeletal arm in the dirt counts the same as a dead body too, but maybe a bunch of skeleton parts from different bodies in a pile would be worse than a single dead body. We don't know if bodies ever stop.

The graveyard that got overrun by undead was within the kingdom and only happened because because he was a necromancer class. We see some characters in smaller towns burying their undead, and we know they don't have guards, so spawning undead requires a lot of bodies. The rate of them spawning requires a lot of negative energy, etc. Burning the bodies themselves at such a high rate might cause other problems, since it's not just the fact that dead bodies exist that creates negative energy, it's the negative aspect of it that does.

Fantasy worlds are allowed to have fantasy problems, but the people living in fantasy worlds should by and large be trying to solve their fantasy problems in the same way that real people solve real problems. That's good worldbuilding. They don't have to be successful, but the tension of their lack of success is also good worldbuilding.

basically the benefits of isekai is that unlike say a traditional fantasy series, where characters need reasons to be explained basic and common things, for there to be a reason why a character doesn't know the simplest shit about geography of where they live, the character doesn't know because they are not from the world, so the audience immediately understands why they don't know and the mc themselves can be the audience stand in. It even explains why and creates situations that the MC can't ask these things as they should know but wants to know, adding some mystery and tension easily.
Not to mention how easily it means the MC can be an audience stand in for how the author expects people to react to certain things, making it easy to endear the audience to the MC.
its very similar to what fantasy was doing 20 years ago (and many more prior) where you have a lot of "know nothing farm boy from the middle of no where is actually the hero", why does this person know nothing about magic that is supposed common in our world? well farmboy from the middle of nowhere, why does he not know common simple things? was never taught, no school, knows nothing, its just a very easy setup for the writing and doesn't require the author to explain anything but also lets reader more easily connect to the character, understand them, and see and understand his experiences.

Basically you just never need to explain why shit is the way it is and you can kind of just do w/e you want with it, its way harder to write a character that has all this information and is using it and how you can convey this to a reader and make it not have info dumps about shit. isekai is just very convenient

Albedo's true form is meant to look like a monster too. It's never been completely revealed in the novels, but it's vaguely described. There's a scene where Ainz has them all relax in a bath and it's implied Albedo takes her true form when with Shalltear and another girl, while the girls are alone. Her weight, the splash her body makes when she enters the water, and a bunch of other details is vaguely explained to imply she looks like some kind of gorilla (in shape) beast.

Yes, her true form is implied to look like a Nalfeshnee, or something similar to its shape. It's eluded to many times. You mentioned the gorilla reference. There's the bath scene, where the narration doesn't explicitly describe her own looks directly, but that she looks different as she enters the bath, she is much hairier, her size is MUCH larger, and when she enters the pool, most of the water spills out. There's another one where she mentions needed to be in a large tub just to brush her teeth. I don't think Ainz has seen this form. Albedo's true form is due to her creator loving to include gap moe into his creations. Albedo is one of the three major sisters he created. Albedo is meant to look absolutely beautiful on the outside, but is ugly on the inside (her true form and her personality). Nigredo is horrific to look atand will immediately try to kill anyone (even guild members, Ainz included) who enters her room if you don't know how to solve her puzzle that deactivates her attack. When she's normal, she has the purest soul and wants to protect children. Rubedo's appearance hasn't been revealed yet, but she's supposed to be the strongest out of all the NPCs. I assume her appearance will be something unassuming, to mask her destructive power. Sebas also has a true form. He, Albedo, and Cocytus are meant to have a sort of Rock, Paper, Scissor thing going on. I forgot the implication, but it's something like Sebas attacks slower, but all his attacks hit very hard, so Albedo being a tank would have a disadvantage against blocking his blows. Cocytus would have the DPS advantage against Sebas, but would struggle against Albedo's defenses. Shalltear is considered the strongest floor guardian because she was specifically designed to fight players and was geared for that kind of versatile combat.
