It teased players at the very start by showing all the UT characters in some kind of alternate universe, then completely dumped any relation to UT in favor of a story with all new characters in the dark world. Everything else can be asserted to be Frisk expressing something from the perspective of a narrator, making their own jokes. Or, fi you really don't care to characterise your main character, it's just Toby Fox writing what makes sense then and there.

The first game is what Kris did to the closet and Card Kingdom dark worlds before the game began, the second game implies that Kris was the one who gave the ThornRing to Spamton after finding it before the game began, the third game is the end of chapter 3 if you beat the Knight but in reverse order and tells you that the Knight is following Kris's orders.
