Sonic Racing Cross Roads alone has a better roster. Nintendo thinks Mario's characters alone can somehow best anything because they are like Disney. However much like how Disney got their asses raped by Dreamworks when Shrek was created Sonic is now kicking ass.

I truly need to ask why would anyone give a fuck about Mario characters? The characters aren't cool or stylish. They have even less personality because Mario games don't prioritize storytelling too much NOT even in the RPG games which Nintendo shuns as well so who would want to play as them? Sonic Characters are simply better because they all have dynamic personalities and even character arcs. They all satisfy an archetype and the games concentrate on their characterization. SpongeBob himself in the early seasons was naive and childlike but he was also genuinely polite and not constantly screaming, and the show had some funny jokes for Nick standards so it was broadly popular among both kids and adults. Then when it got big everything went Scream Talking mode but by then Nick had resigned themselves to the thought of "This is our cash cow" and made that a self-fulfilling prophecy by throwing money at it.

2012 does generally get more crossover appearances but Mutant Mayhem did pretty well IIRC so they've moved some crossover stuff to those designs (see THPS3+4 Mikey). I guess it'll depend on when the deal was struck/development on them started. I don't hate MM but the designs only really work in the movie's context (they're much younger than usual, like 13 instead of late teens like most iterations).
