my first playthrough i'll usually project myself onto the character i make and choose options closest to what i'd do in that situation. subsequent playthroughs i'll come up with a general concept for a character and then play the game choosing what i think they'd do.

I made a character that I think fits the type of game I'm playing and that I like the look of. I have never taken myself into account when making a character.

Therefore, if a game gives me the option I will make a cute girl and put her in cute clothing/armor because it makes me happy to see them on my screen because I like cute things.

I'm not sure I'd call it puppeteering, but the character I create is often times not me. I make it a challenge to make a character that has a different moral compass, goals, and beliefs, and it usually makes me actually think about what the character would do, instead of my first knee-jerk reaction.
But, sometimes, I just make 'me with some extra bullshit' and turn my brain off.

Apparently I'm a weirdo cause I imagine them as someone I fuck with like Stanley from the Stanley Parable and play out fictional back and forth convos in my head between the protagonist and myself.

Do any of you ever grow so attached to your puppet characters you start migrating them to other games or imagining them replacing an established character in a story without character creation just out of curiosity for how that situation would play out with that character's personality or skills?

Skating games are really the only ones I can make me in. Sometimes shooters.
Otherwise I just make le oc that makes playing the game fun. Will say though skate 3 and the original THUG unironically made me change how I dressed due to finding weirdly specific cosmetics in them cool as fuck as a kid. Sometimes a game isn't malleable like that though. Never really self insert in morrowind or shit like that, view the character model I choose as a vehicle to enhance the gameplay choices I make is all. Can spice a mundane choice ya know? Orc mage, woman warrior. Etc. How far does this go? Am I supposed to self insert with animal jam or neopets, prt pet park? Only zoomer flash game that had character interactivity like that to me was club pension that It felt like me waltzing around. Hell alot if games you just have a character wearing shit you lucked out on getting

Do self-insertfags really play open ended rpgs with customizable characters and a wide variety of quest outcomes and just play as the same character, same race and same class choosing the same decisions over and over again?

What a waste of money. I believe self-insertfags are all trannies, because being incapable of playing a different person in an rpg is the most womanly thing a man can do. If you've ever played d&d with females in the group, you know what I mean. No bitches ever play anyone other than another version of themselves. I remember being a naive retard when I managed to get a group that was mostly women, MOSTLY WOMEN IN FUCKING D&D, fucking teenage me thought I had hit the jackpot and I could wife up one of the girls only for them to be an insufferable bunch of retards who all made slight variations on the same character, all of which were extensions of themselves, and bored the ever loving fuck out of me so bad it cured my teen coomerness. A year later, the same four characters they made got their own Star Wars movie. They made Rey. They all made Rey before there ever was a Rey. That's all they could make, the Rey archtype; the idealized version of themselves.

What the fuck happened to women? Mary Shelley wrote like fifteen different characters, most of which were all men, with a variety of motives and perspectives.

I've never heard of Mary Shelley, but I assume she's just an exceptional person overall. There are tons of normalfagslop you simply never heard of before because it's so widespread and uninteresting.
But to be honest with you, when it comes to vidya it can be really hard not to make the same character every time. Simply because vidya doesn't have a self-aware GM that can adjust NPC reactions or let you come up with your own dialog. Vidya usually has either evil-good or some stupidly niche "gray" choices that doesn't cover anywhere near enough archetypes.

Videogames only support midwit roleplay, and midwits are narcissistic so they just make themselves.

I like making female characters because I like the idea of guiding and protecting a pretty girl, and I also get to feel like a creepy pervert that gets to watch a cutie walk around (and sometimes I imagine a whole routine too, as if I were a ghost that gets to float around when she's lying in bed, taking a shower, touching herself) without any repercussions. A little problem is that if there's romance I want to romance other girls but it feels off, it feels like something "I" would do, not my character.
And if the romance options are too good, the female player character is obnoxious, or it thematically makes sense for the character to be a guy, I make a manly and generic looking dude who is also his own person, but instead of thinking of "protecting and guiding" him, it's just about doing what makes more sense for him as an individual (I make up a personality, backstory, thoughts and so on as the game goes on).

If they have a previously defined life or a voice then they are their own character like Shepard from Mass Effect or V from Cyberpunk. If they have a loosely defined life or let you pick the backstory and don't really speak like your Warden from Dragon Age Origins then its your own character and you can self insert.

I see them as another character in the story.
I try to make them the kind of character I would want to see but try to give them a defined personality so that I know what, say, what they would say in a dialogue or what abilities would suit them as they leveled up, regardless of whether it would be "fun" or what I would want them to do.
I.e. I might make an idealistic "perfect hero" character who never goes for backstabs or sneak attacks and tries to 1v1 enemies, even if there is no incentive for it. And always picks high road dialogue options even if they're impractical or have obvious consequences. I like that kind of character and I like seeing them win or fuck up in equal measure.
But fitting OP's picture more yeah one time I made a DoL character who was a sneaky little thief tomboy reverse trap brat who was kinda dumb and shit at fighting even though it's trivial to maintain a maxed physique and grades

Alright, bear with me because this is gonna sound a bit weird.

In Mabinogi, you play as every videogame character you've ever played as. Or, more precisely, every videogame character you played was in fact your "Milletian" being reborn as that character. See, Milletians are all multiverse travellers with the power of rebirth, so they can look like and even act like whatever, but its still the same person. Game mechanics - even logging out - are all canon. If you quit Mabinogi for good, its just that your Milletian got bored of the world and went to do things in other worlds (see: other games). This idea of my "avatar" being distinct from me but always the same identity, no matter the shape or apparent personality, stuck with me.

Huh, I forgot about this part. I'm playing an RPG RIGHT NOW, and I end up "playing as myself" even though I don't make myself in the character creator. I create a character that's not me, but it usually ends up being me through its actions and choices.

I just make whoever I feel comfortable with to use as an avatar. If someone wants to make their player character a girl then go ahead, I just see no reason to make a female player character given the choice since fanarts and the like render those reasons unneeded.

I find that the superficially similar, but fundamentally different facial expressions in that image express my thinking behind why I treat my created characters the way I described. Both of their faces are 'strained, angry, serious', but with Orton, besides being covered in blood, you can catch a glimpse of a more real exertion, the kind only a working man shows, even though Orton is acting. He has a wide eyed, tired but pressing onwards stare. Orton worked his ass off to stand there. Bliss just didn't eat too much and talked to the right people, she was probably kind and sociable, but also competitive and willing to put herself out there.
Bliss has nothing but a 'rawr im angry xD' faice and it's not just because she's acting. It's because women are not serious people, therefore female characters are fundamentally not serious.
This is fine, and how it should be, women are made to look after the little matters at home, not to roam around putting things right. That's what men do. So there are only a few ways a female is going to go on an adventure.
One, she is on some personal journey to 'discover herself' which will inevitably either lead to tragedy because of her inherent weaknesses or lead to her finding her way back home to settle down and have kids, if it's accurately written by an author who understands women. Two, she is misguided and sticking it to a man. Three, due to some tragic fluke, she must go on this journey, and a man takes it upon himself to guide and protect her. Four, it's a happy, guided tour more than it is a real adventure.
A father figure guiding the female character works well for scenarios three and four and personally I like it, there's not enough positive male-female companionship stories. Two is only really suitable for short stories because the woman gets corrected by reality very quickly, though there is potential for a long string of misguided choices. One can be very good but is rarely done and doesn't mesh with most games.

Nah, that is well into "unreasonably big for any normal dev" territory desu. Almost head-sized, on 4-head tall proportions to boot, they are huge.

I guess I at least somewhat self-insert because I only really play male characters. Playing female characters feels strange, especially if the story includes romance and/or the game is multiplayer. I generally don't play a game to see pretty women and prefer to look afar rather than control. I have preferences but I'm not a slave to them to the extent I have to see one I really like the look of constantly on the screen whenever I can.
It sort of resonated when some anons said they see their characters like their children. I don't think I'd want others to leer at my daughter and wouldn't want to meddle with her relationships but I don't think I'd be as reticent as a father, or maybe as an uncle, to fill a boy in on a little something about women.

The few times I've made characters for tabletop RPGs I think I've failed to make them fun and distinct, maybe because I didn't properly focus on some aspects I established or something. Most likely it's a matter of me not building a character out in a way that is suitable for the type of game, working out motivations better for more storytelling-focused games, then sticking to them, stuff like that.

Character was combat focused and mainly used their fists, a power fist, and the rail gun. He wore the winterized T-51B like it was his second skin and slept in his underwear. He never returned to Vault 101 either.

Someone else. I guess I can identify with my character, but you can do that with any character. If there's dialogue choices I'll start with a guy character who does the right thing and if I feel like another playthrough it's girl character who does the wrong thing. That should mean that I experience as much of the game as I can.

Unironically want to get a BJD because dressing up a cute doll and buying cute clothes for it is very appealing to me. However it feels strange to do so from a stigma perspective because I'm a guy who hits the gym and does boxing as a hobby. I like fashion history (especially pretty dresses) and unfortunately i'm concerned about the judgement from my parents. I think the Doll from bloodborne and Duchess are two of my favorite types, they have those nice Victorian/French era outfits that I am a fan of. So it's a mix of history, enjoying aesthetics, cute girls, and the idea of creating quality clothes for them. There's no lust behind these figures and I don't want to be them, because that's just weird.
