Its not hard. I've played a female character for a decade. I don't think its "literally me" though.
I don't like ERP (its boring), but I have done it before a long long time ago, and the way I saw it was just basically since I'm controlling the girl, I was just making her do what I'd what a girl to do if I was the guy in that situation, or what I'd like to see a girl do.
