No, Nintendo even tells you how to do it. Just go to your account settings and set your residence to Japan. The catch is that payment methods don't work cross-region, so you'll have to buy a Japanese eshop gift card off Playasia or Amazon or something.

You don't have many broken combos this early into the game.
Give the two-handed skills to any phys attackers, it's great pretty much all game long.
Two handed + sword magic(hitting enemy weakness) hits pretty hard at this point.

I remember thief and ranger hitting pretty hard since bows are strong and the extra hits from high AGI increase your damage quite a bit.

Don't try the usual 3dps + heal/support, support is a fulltime job here and totally worth it (IIRC there are no good supports early game but keep it in mind)
Brave / Default is the name of the game, almost every boss has a big damage turn + a few weak turns so defend during their bigdick damage turns, setup your damage dealers and go all out the next turn.
For party comp aim for something like:

Idk if they changed any boss mechanics, but a vast majority of bosses use physical dmg in the original. If you have Paladin already, use at least 1 in your party for their aoe protection. Unlock Chemist ASAP, it's the most OP class in the game, albeit I say that because on the 3DS there's a Streetpass shop that made getting mats for it easy. Take last bit with a grain of salt.

That lance class with the spellblade subclass is what i used to demolish everything on the 3ds version. one of the aoe moves the dragoon class can delete enemies when buffed with whatever they are weak too. makes grinding easy. BD is the only FF game i ever hit lvl 99 with all characters. Probably wont be rebuying this though, the second half is a slog and upscaled graphics wont change that.
