It's not. Dark Ages were ~2000 to ~2011. Every genre worth shit died there. Strategy games of all varieties were dead. cRPGs were dead. Stealth games were dead. Only thing that existed were godawful, linear brown and bloom shooters and action games, which were designed for fucking gamepads on top of this lol.
Ever since vidya got FAR better. Dead, proper genres were revived. Consoles lost to PCs, exclusives proved to be a mistake, AA devs started to live and experiment and there is far more variety in games in general. Even AAA shit got better. New IPs are being created constantly and turn out to be a massive successes out of nowhere. It's actually great now, only actual problem are political leanings of game creators.

Because gaming is designed by committee with teams of dozens, sometimes hundreds of people, creating the age old problem of something too large being incapable of carrying the soul and spirit and passion of it's individual creators.
Indie stuff exists and CAN be good, but just like 30 years ago, a good indie is one out of a hundred, maybe even a thousand.

Stick to smaller scale stuff and older games, you'll have fun.
I thought I was depressed because I just wasn't able to enjoy modern media in general (besides books, there's still occasionally some good books), but when I stopped trying to keep up with newer stuff and just stepped back to like the 80s/90s/2k I found out that no, things are just bad now because everything's so fucking formulaic and profit driven that they strip the soul out to try and create even more relatability for further market reach.

knowing it means you can rationalize it. if you're not acting rationally because you've had the idea burned into you that you are the problem, problem meaning the reason your parents are upset or having issues, you will punish yourself. when you recognize that it was all a lie to keep you under control, you will stop punishing yourself and direct your anger in the right direction. right now the most appropriate thing for op to do is what he's told, which is to punish himself. it's not his fault that his parents manipulated his survival instincts like that. they are responsible. op needs to choose rebellion, but it's the hardest thing for people like that to do when every instinct they have tells them what they are currently doing is the right thing.
