Eternal is close to being a good design. The callback to the exposed abdomen by coloring the armor in skintone is inspired but the pauldrons are also in skin tone for some reason, which at best muddies the design and at worst makes it look as some sort of tube-top. Exposing only the overarms is weird as well, there's like a 15:1 armor to skin ratio. The proportions are good, he looks like a proper brutish killing machine. His elephant stump feet are dumb, but this element is dime a dozen in modern sci-fi.
The studs are the most unecessary greebly tertiary shapes imaginable and make absolutely no sense. If you just remove the studs the design is improved significantly. The arm blade and shoulder cannon feel mismatched and were probably tacked on after the initial design was set in stone.
Adress this and tint his visor a bit darker, because I really don't care to see his face, and it would probably be the best iteration of a DOOM protagonist.

Doom Eternal's art direction as a whole is trying to reconcile classic Doom aesthetics, which is why its pickups and user interface are so vibrant and video game-y and the enemies try to look more like their classic counterparts. But it's like the only thing they got from Doomguy was

I think the key weakness is now his armor just looks stupid because it's trying to evoke classic Doomguy's "armor over fatigues" look, exposing his forearms, and with all the green with patches of brown or gray, while still just being segmented power armor. And also nothing else in the universe looks like it, either in Dark Ages' setting or nuDoom's Mars/Earth setting. It makes it look like he's wearing chaps. Either just give him something made of an actual fabric like pants or a t-shirt visible under his breastplate, or commit to the power armor.

I feel like there was reason Halo mostly stuck with Master Chief's armor being mostly green with dark neutral accents. Even then he's not the only guy in super special power armor around, by Reach you start seeing shitloads of Spartans with their own variations, on top of multiplayer.


Anyway the real longterm consequence of this is how much the game obsesses over justifying everything Doomguy does as if it was really essential. It's like if a Mario game had a five minute long cutscene about Mario's Red Wing™ boots being blessed by the princess to crush turts.

Chief's armour and size looked great in Halo Infinite. 343 had finally managed to make Chief and Spartans look like Spartans (not counting the wild extra armours... but the more normal ones looked great)
