Yes, being saccharine and infantile didn't help in the era of Y2K and the edgy 00s. It's not a coincidence the Zelda announced after Wind Waker was the much darker Twilight Princess, which quickly became a best seller for the franchise and basically the face of Zelda as far as merchandising went, and that the next 3D Mario went to space and incorporated a bombastic orchestra, with even the producers talking about the design philosophy of "Mario isn't cute, Mario is cool."
Longterm, much like the Wii U which took the title of notorious Nintendo failure from it, the Gamecube was ultimately necessary growing pains for Nintendo, who made a lateral pivot into the Wii/DS years and were able to insulate themselves from the budget shocks that were killing publishers and developers during 7th gen. The disc size, lack of online service, and lack of more T/M rated exclusives compared to the PS2. The PS2 also had a year headstart and the xbox had the advantage of halo and xbox live. It was the era of gritty games, Cel shaded Zelda and Mario were not the answers at the time. The GC was still a great console, but Nintendo was just a day late and a dollar short.

It had no 3rd party support, which is also why nobody gives a shit about the n64 apart from youtubers. The average consumer wanted more variety than bing bing wahoo.

I'm a '96 proto zoomer and my older brother told me that Wind Waker was relentlessly made fun of at his high-school. It kinda makes sense as all of his friends were into making DOOM maps and playing Unreal Tournament.

i grew up with a gamecube and ps2 and gamecube games stuck in my memory more

After the GC Nintendo rebranded themselves into a super specific niche of family friendly nonsense.
Luigis mansion 1 and twilight princess were EXCELLENT because it was gritty but fun for kids. Zelda has never been dark or gritty since, and Luigis mansion games just look ridiculously tame.

It's a terrible tragedy, that this essential rebranding had to take away some of the soul from Nintendo's image. I look back at my GC games and still think nothing since then has captured the same vibes as it did then.

Miyamoto's only real involvement with Wind Waker was desperately trying to get Aonuma to change Wind Waker's art style, and Sunshine was just Yamauchi getting Koizumi to do a rush job on a 3D Mario for the Gamecube because Miyamoto's Super Mario 64 2 projects kept going nowhere. It was Yamauchi's last orders before he handed the company off to Iwata.

But yes, alcohol withdrawal is a serious risk which is why alcohol abusers need to be weaned off it. It was a big deal during covid that people suddenly not having access to alcohol because of closures could risk adding more stress to emergency systems. If you're a heavy user that just suddenly stops you risk having seizures or delirium tremens which can escalate to death.

that game was sick i cant remember if it was the first one or the second one, but i played it as a demo on a target kiosk and it took me over a decade to find out what the fuck it was years later. i even made threads describing the games as best i could and it took forever to figure it out.
