Its 2025 its impossible for a game to release in a truly misleading manner. There's tons of trailers, demos, user reviews and usually at least one no commentary playthrough. The ranked culture of online games has poisoned every multiplayer genre. Without rank, people will play online matches put try their best, improve, play again tomorrow. Before a meta was formed, a sequel was released and people jump to that. This encourages fundamentals.
Now with the introduction of rank, people grind these games. It's a job that autist use to escape the real life pain. You don't play fighting games to get good or have fun. You choose a fighting game that carries legacy skills, i.e, people won't try a new fighting game. Tekken will stick with Tekken, meanwhile Street Fighters players will stick with street fighter.
Even on fightcade, you'll be lucky to find an unranked match.
As long as the concept of rank exists, sbmm will exists, and multiplayer will remain dogshit.

Dark Souls 2 is great, the majority of people who disagree have been told so by “muh heckin video essays” and are unable to form their own opinions. The inverse of this applies to Fallout NV. It is good, but it is not the 10/10 that people have been brainwashed into believing because of a 12 hour YouTube video delivered by someone who sounds confident about it.

The Last of Us is serviceable at best. It only has the reputation it does because it was very impressive for a PS3 game. It does not hold up to modern scrutiny and consists of several tedious and repetitive set-pieces. The story is nothing original and the gameplay is boring. The Walking Dead tells the same core story in a better, snappier and more interesting way.

At their core, Nintendo make games for literal children. What people refer to as ‘pure’ gameplay is because the games are barebones experiences for kids. It’s not some bold design philosophy. The company has not truly innovated in gameplay mechanics since the Wii and the last first party game they released that showed any of that classic Nintendo style magic was Mario Galaxy.

Mass Effect 3 was never as bad as people made it out to be. By that point more people were online and able to be swayed by the mob more easily. Also, Mass Effect 1 is far and away a better and more interesting game than ME2.

Helldivers 2 is Reddit.

Stellar Blade is a solid 7 out of 10 at best, boosted only by artificial hype and gooners. At times it’s actually quite boring.

Skyrim is the best WRPG ever made, in spite of its flaws. Mods do not improve it because it was already perfect.

Chrono Trigger is the best ‘traditional’ JRPG of all time. This is not the TRVKE, but what is, is that the genre has not improved or innovated in gameplay or storytelling since then. The move to realtime combat was borne out of necessity because there is nothing more that can be added to the formula and it had become stale by the end of the PS1’s life.

Monster Hunter's original fantasy was always about HUNTING monsters not just fighting them. Which is why they spend so much time worldbuilding the lore, environment, natural factors to show how the monster fits in. You see the shit in the cutscenes? That's the monster hunter the creator is working toward and every new game gets closer to that ultimate goal. It's actually amazing to see someone refine their product to its optimus.

Dying Light is a fairly by-the-numbers story about shady governments and viral outbreaks. The core story of the man who turns on his employer to help the little people has been done a thousand times and done better.

You constantly play as a man trapped and bound to one thing or another, and ultimately the biggest freedom is gained not for you, but for the people you save and give a future to in the good ending.
I like all of that, but at the same time they gave you a limited chance to go down the same route of greed and short term gain every one else in rapture did, and a full on story end that reflects that.

The end of WW2 was effectively the end of large scale conquest (in the normal style) by the top level powers of the world, and we were the trendsetters for it.
